On the downside, for most headphones with a normal-length cable, adding the SmartTalk makes the headphone cable too long. Having a 5 - 6 foot long headphone cable gets to be a pain, especially while walking around or taking the train, etc. I've yet to find an effective way to deal with the long cable. On other headphones with long cables, I coil up the part of the cable closest to the headphone jack of the iPod. But with the SmartTalk, because the microphone jack is on the end of the cable towards the device, if you coil up that end of that cable, the microphone gets to be too far away from you to pick up what you're saying. Coiling up the part of the cable closer to the headphones looks awkward and everything gets tangled.
As other reviewers have commented, the plug also has some problems. If it gets bumped or turned in the headphone jack -- which happens a lot when your iPod/iPhone is in your pocket -- the music can unexpectedly pause, or start playing again. It gets extremely annoying after a while.
If you need a mic for your iPod touch, or want to use your own headphones with your iPod, the SmartTalk is useful, but you probably shouldn't plan on having it attached to your device all the time.
Works with iPod Touch
Provides pause, skip forward, and skip backward functionality
No volume control
Cord length is long
Headphones have a 3mm socket input, and I got a very short male-male connector cord, so I have a very simple system: - iPhone -> SmartTalk (~ 2 foot long cable) clipped on shirt -> headphones. No excess cable lying around! Control button on SmartTalk allows pause/un-pause of music without fumbling in pocket, or canceling of alarms or answering the phone (once you get used to the ~ 0.3 second lag in responding to the button). Basically lets you have the convenience of the control button that's on the headphones supplied with the iPhone, but lets you use real headphones. No volume control on the SmartTalk, but there's one on the headphones. Skipping tracks via repeated pushes works fine: two quick pushes to skip forward, 3 to skip back (a bit harder).
The "hold button to invoke voice dialing" feature is also great: can pause iTunes & make a call, all without taking phone out of pocket. Only used occasionally with the phone, but seems to work OK.
The cloth-covered cord is a nice touch. I've read other reports that noted that the cord failed at the connector end: no signs of that yet but only had it a few weeks.
Now with this unit and new phone and new service area (yes, probably other contributers to my problem) when I made calls/or received, I would be told that people i am speaking with hear an echo of their conversation coming back to them. I have been adjusting the volume on the car but I don't think that is really helping. Shows me that the mic isn't made for this and doesn't cut out (Half-duplex) when the other parties are talking.
It's great for when I have to listen to messages or make short calls..but..i like my road trips. I will still be checking out other units and i have bought 2 so I can use my phone handsfree at the computer. The other unit is a different manufacturer and suffers the same problem. GRRRR..
I hope this is helpful because the rest of the unit functions as expected! I still recommend it to let you walk about with your phone and have headsets on..:)
