Yes, these are obscenely expensive, and outfitting an entire undies drawer with them would be quite pricey.

However, buy a pair and they are quite amazing. I recently decided to upgrade my undies drawer, and I bought 1 pair each of several high-end boxer briefs. These were the most expensive I tried, but I own a couple of other smartwool items (long sleeve baselayer tops) that are great, so I bit the bullet and gave these a shot. I wasn't disappointed.

What makes these great? Simply put, they have the moisture wicking and general "clean" feeling of synthetic fibers, yet are just as comfy and cool as cotton. The other high end competitors I tried at the same time were the patagonia capilene (I also own several capilene baselayer tops and like them too), which I didn't really like as a boxer brief - they just felt too "synthetic" and not comfortable like my old cheap cotton Champions. I also tried the very well reviewed ex-officios, and also highly reviewed Saxx Ultras. The Ex officios were good, but again felt somewhat "synthetic" and not as soft or comfortable as the smartwools. The Saxx, well, their claim to fame are these weird elastic wings, sort of like a built in jockstrap, that are supposed to support your sac and keep it in place ... I found this not necessary and kind of weird. I'll include links to all of these below. Bottom line though, the smartwools had the best combination of comfort plus moisture wicking and general "clean" even after wearing all day (whereas cotton gets kind of sweaty and gross). Also note I live in FL, am a profuse sweater, and I find these sufficiently cool ... as cool or cooler than any of the competitors I mentioned plus my old cotton champions.

I didn't wear them all that often. I bought them for long backpacking trips. Did that a few times maybe 20 actual hours marching. Wore them occasionally for long car rides.

Less than six months and probably less than 15 washes there is a big hole. Not along a seam but right where my special friends hang out. I would say not really a high friction point as compared to the seat.

Loved them during their short life but will not buy again. Maybe stick to socks smartwool.

They fit quite good, and are exactly what you'd expect: breathable underwear. A minor gripe is that the branding is quite obvious, as not accurate in the picture; text is near white and stands out, if that is an issue at all.

I bought these based on a review on a web site that reviews outdoor gear. These were the top rated product but I've found they tend to bag too much after extended wearing. I actually prefer the less expensive Exofficio which retains its shape much better. Presumably an advantage of the Smartwool would be that wool doesn't smell as much as synthetics but I've never had a big problem with smelly underwear (as opposed to say tops).

Generally I'm a huge fan of smartwool products. I own more than 30 pairs of their socks! Sadly for these underwear though I think the fabric needs a little more elastic material in its blend because it doesn't stretch enough or feel like it has any compression. Like it's all boxer, no brief. It just kind of feels worn out. It also rides up somewhat. Probably ok for wearing dress clothes or just sitting around an office, but not so much for hiking/biking/climbing or any kind of outdoor adventure.

FANTASTIC product. My husband is preparing for an elk hunt and these, although rather pricey, are his favorite. SmartWool is much softer than some of the less expensive versions and performs well. Highly recommend.

I first wore smartwool Boxers in 2015 to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine. Three pair lasted me then entire trip and continue on. They are comfortable for everyday use and especially good for hiking in summer. They wick moister away from your skin and dry quickly after a rainstorm.
