These are quite thin. Socks don't get much thinner than this. I switch between these and the "Light" version of the same socks. I like both of them. I tend to use the "Light" version with my more cushioned running shoes, and I tend to use these "UltraLight" socks with my minimal shoes.
I wear about size 10.5 or 11 in running shoes and the size large works well for me. They fit snug, but not constricting. If I had feet that were much larger, I would consider the next size up...
Overall, I wouldn't change a thing about these socks. I would recommend them to anyone.
I bought those socks over a year ago, and only one of the pairs is now showing signs of wear on high pressure areas of my foot. (I wore them everyday for 2 months, while I was on vacation, and then multiple times a week, for over a year!) The wool seems to have faded away, but the nylon(?) which holds the shape of the sock itself is still there. So.. I will wear these socks until the holes becomes more noticeable.
I will always wear Smartwools now. They fit well, the shape of the sock prevents any uncomfortable ankle-grinding from shoes as well.
Though, I should add that I've not tried any other wool socks, or Smartwool competitors. I simply will stick with them because I've had a good experience with them.
These socks worked great for my ultra. It was an unseasonably hot and windy day, these stood up to almost 90 degree heat for 11 hours of running. I got some little rash spots but I also had them on my legs above the socks so I don't think it was the socks. 11 hours, only one blister that was gone in a couple days. These are my go to socks for long distance and my favorite pair in the drawer.
One thing was that you will need to flip the socks and then hand-wash them, otherwise the wool will get a bit messy and loose.
