This hat is really versatile because it is naturally moisture-wicking. If you get sweaty, you won't be drenched and freezing later. It is tightly woven enough to be very warm.
I have worn it under helmets before and it was a huge improvement over knits and fleece. Since it is thin, it can easily go into your pockets. It's so silky soft and stretchy, but I could see it being too tight for people with size 8 heads. I wear a size 7 1/4. The logo is discreet and you can rotate the hat if you don't want it on your forehead.
Tested it on a cold day: at 7am it was 29F with winds at 12-17 mph and gusts to 30. As the morning went on, this cap kept my head warm, wind-proof from gusts, and very comfortable. By lunchtime, the temp warmed up to around 38F. I kept the cap on (hat head) and began to sweat mid-afternoon. But the moisture-wicking capabilities of wool were superb. Wore it all day; cold, hot, wind, sweat, it didn't matter - cap performed beautifully.
I plan on getting a couple more. Highly recommend!
Not to mention it tends to ride up my ears, giving me random gusts of cold wind to my brain.
You're better off paying half the price for a fuzzy Chinese hat, and you can draw your own weird stick-man on the front, if you'd like.
I chose a wool hat because their thermal properties are great even when wet. I live in NYC so sudden, unannounced bursts of rain are possible on just about any given day.
I chose the purple just because it would be something a little different than my black/grey acrylic hats and I'm very pleased with the pattern.
All in, the hat fits my head very well (7 3/4"), doesn't itch like most wool products and keeps me nice and toasty.
Again,... Great hat!
