The 13 quilts start with a ready-made precut packs but add extra fabric to make different colour arrangements. Each quilt has alternative fabrics to make a unique color selection. Most of the quilts have traditional repeated blocks but occasional quilts use asymmetrical layouts to create a bold design. Some blocks are made larger than necessary and then cut to size. It is advised to spray starch bias edges before cutting to prevent stretching. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow. There are ideas for enlarging the quilts with extra borders. A gallery shows the quilts with different colour combinations. (British Patchwork and Quilting, December 2015)

"Smash Your Precut Stash!" (C&T Publishing), by longtime quilters Kate Carlson Colleran and Elizabeth Veit Balderrama, shares 13 quilts that give purpose to quilters' collections of precut squares and fabric strips. (Jennifer Forker ABC News, 12/29/15)

Lots of kids have too many toys to play with on a regular basis. My mother used to tell me that if I was not up to the task, then my lonely toys would get up and play with each other while I slept. Freaked me right OUT. Now I am a (slightly) older kid with far too much fabric. (And a sleep disorder, but that is another book review ...) I desperately wish that all those yards and yards would unfold themselves, intermingle in pleasing color combinations, and produce hands-free completed quilt tops for my next awakening.

Right.

In the meantime, there is Smash Your Pre-Cut Stash by Kate Carlson Colleran and Elizabeth Veit Balderrama. Their 13 projects are also ideal for scrap collections. No fancy tools are needed, but a large right-angle triangle ruler may be helpful. The tips and suggestions are not all that abundant or ground-breaking: add more borders, substitute non-match-y for match-y. But the projects are worthy of cutting into your precious "don't touch that!" hoard.

The smallest project is "My Favorite Fat Quarter Runner" at 15"x45". It is the only runner, and would look particularly nice with a small-scale Asian floral. The largest is "Big Wayne" at 104"x104". Its easy construction adds borders to the smaller (and manly-hued) "Wayne's Quilt". There is a nice blend of contemporary and traditional designs, with lots of opportunities for unique color combinations. The quilting lines stand out on only a few quilts; the piecing is too busy to feature the quilting on most of them.

To my eye, there are 2 standout quilts. "Picturesque" (67"x89") is a garden of 48 flower blocks. They are grouped and sashed in a way that brings to mind Delft tiles.

This is the best book I've ever found that offers designs specifically made to use up your precut stash, but also includes details about using yardage you have on hand. Most of the designs can be completed quickly, but look like you spent a great deal of time on them. It's a MUST for your quilt book collection. I'm in the process of finishing my fave, Down the Garden Path, a simple design with braids I've made using a batik jelly roll. Next will be Dance Party, another wonderful pattern. Don't let this one get away. (I'm including a photo of the braids hanging on my design board. I love batiks!)

I am a big fan of pre-cuts and this book provides lovely options for using your stash -- whether your a novice or experienced quilter. Several of the quilts (such as "Dance Party") would be easy for a novice quilter. My favorite quilt, "Picturesque," looks like mosaic tiles and would be more suited to an experienced quilter. The quilts also range from modern to traditional, and there's even a masculine design (called "Wayne's Quilt). This book was clearly well thought-out and provides many creative options for using your precut stash.

I am very interested in several quilts in this book. My complaint is that since I got the Kindle version I have not been able to download and print the patterns I want to make. Even though this is allowable for my own personal use, it just will not print out. It is difficult to follow directions that I cannot check off as I am cutting and then trying to sew. I do not think that I will ever purchase another quilt book via Kindle.

Somehow, I often have pre-cuts lying around, because I love to buy them because they are so pretty!!!! But then, what to do with this bounty? This book has lots of fun, bright patterns that I can't wait to make! (I've already made the fat-quarter table runner into a baby quilt by basically making 3 side by side - super cute and the perfect size!)

It was with pleasure that I was able to review this book by Kate and Elizabeth. If you are a quilter, you have Pre-Cuts in your stash for sure. But sometimes you wonder what to do with them, this books makes that all clear! Lots of great projects that involve a variety of pre-cuts. My favorites in the book are Line Dance and Dance Party.... Hmmm... I sense a theme! I guess I like dancing with fabric. And if you like bright new designs and dancing with your own fabric, then this book is a must for your quilting library!

So many great quilts in this book - I want to make them all! The book focuses on using your fat quarters, charm packs and jelly rolls. Each quilt uses one of these, but the authors have generously provided information about how to use a different pre-cut if that is what you have. Some of the projects use several fabrics in addition to the pre-cut and some use just a few. The wonderful variety of quilt projects includes those perfect for beginners and some for quilters looking for a bit more of a challenge. A must-have book for any quilter!
