The Smell of Good Mud Paperback – March 15, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Lauren Zuniga has made a name for herself for fearlessly confronting legislators and being an ambassador for the Heartland. This collection is the underbelly. No emotion is spared. No image is lost. It is a field guide to blisters and curtsies. It is a chronicle of women/children/animals coming together in a house named Clementine.

About the author

Lauren Zuniga has lived in 60 houses in Oklahoma City. This most likely contributes to her fear of commitment and tendency to fall in lust with kitchens. She currently lives with her two kids in an artist collective named Clementine where they experiment with weird things like kombucha and cooperation.
She is a nationally touring poet, teaching artist and activist. In 2010, she challenged the Oklahoma legislature with an evocative video poem that MoveOn.org called "the most riveting message on the war on women in under three minutes." The poem has also been featured on Daily Kos, RH Reality Check and On the Issues Magazine. Along with stunning hate mail, she was nominated for State Poet Laureate, gave a TED talk and has since shared stages with top business leaders, state officials and rock stars.
She is one of the top 5 ranked female poets in the world, the founder of Oklahoma Young Writers and currently the 2012 Activist-in-Residence for the Center for Social Justice at the University of Oklahoma. She has toured from Canada to New York to Texas offering a fresh style of strong imagery and inspiring passion. Her work has been featured in several independent films, on XM radio, and in fun places like Muzzle Magazine and The Good Things About America anthology from Write Bloody Publishing. Her first book, The Nickel Tour, is available from Penmanship Books. She was one of seven winners chosen for Write Bloody's 2011 open submission competition for her second poetry collection, The Smell of Good Mud. Find more on http://laurenzuniga.com
"People often mistake loud or anthemic poetry as being "for the people." And often, these poets are rewarded for their energy, despite how topical their subject matter really is. So I thank whatever wild gods created Lauren Zuniga. Her poems are massive; brimming with the wit, heart and humanness we all crave from our leaders. Unlike so many artists, she understands her purpose. She puts her life on the line. Her poems are the quiet protesters whose existence is proof that the world can, in fact, be fixed. Think of the photograph of the man standing before a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square, and you'll get an idea of what Zuniga's poetry is willing to do for you." ~ Rachel McKibbens, Author, Pink Elephant, Winner - 2009 Women of the World Poetry Slam
"Dear Lauren, It is impossible to read your book without falling in love with you. I stopped reading right before the end so I wouldn't show up on your Oklahoma porch wearing a baby blue tuxedo, ring in hand, begging you to stuff a fistful of cake in my mouth." ~ Andrea Gibson, Author,The Madness Vase, Winner of 2008 Women of the World Poetry Slam
"Lauren Zuniga's words will have you walking along the road to a brilliant green church with pulsing lights inside. When you step into the church, there are feathers and prayer beads and washboard breakbeats and a high priestess telling you how beautiful you are. Even on your worst hair days. Especially on your worst hair days. Her poems are so full of under-the-surface yes and come-as-you-are that you understand the word nirvana in fourteen new ways. She is an edutainer, an elevator straight to the penthouse, a miracle pitcher pouring out the best in you. Woman and mother and human and constant student, Lauren's church of verse has a sign that plugs directly into her heart: ALWAYS OPEN." ~Rob Sturma, author, Miles of Hallelujah
"Lauren Zuniga's work explores the delicious nuances of things unseen, ignored, and overlooked. Her work is exquisite, precise, boundless and soul-shaking." ~Dane Kuttler, Seattle, WA

Lauren's book can go **anywhere** -- you can read it on a bus, you can read it to a baby, you can give your best friend love advice out of it, you can give yourself life advice out of it. This book is a tool of empowerment in being alive. It's not easy, Lauren doesn't pretend that it is, but she's carefully pressed moments between sheets of wax paper for you to absorb in the quiet moments of your need of something covered in beauty. I read this book when I need to be reminded that breathing every day is enough, that dried dirt on your hardworking hands is a monument, that everything is perfect simply because it IS. It's IS-ness is what makes it perfect and profound and gorgeous. The only way this book could be better is if Lauren came along with it to sing all her poems for you out loud. Buy this book, bring it home, read it on your roof, and be happy.
I am an evolutionary biologist, and I usually read scientific texts, but this is so accessible and feels like my feelings have been poured out onto the page.
Worth every penny!!
