This is a very short story. And I suppose that is one of the most fascinating aspects of this work...the fact that it is so short. The author has taken just about 4,000 words, developed a very nice plot, quickly developed four main characters, grabbed our attention with the first two sentences, developed and resolved a mystery, thrown in a bit of magic, used at least four motivators for his characters, offered us good terse dialog and left us wondering as to the motivations of the primary protagonist at the end of the story; left us wondering as to the morality of the situation and even thrown in a most definite love story. And on top of all this, has most certainly left us wanting more.

If you think this is easy using so few words, give it a try.

Recently I have downloaded some fifty different short stories on my Kindle. As I work my way though them I read the good, the bad and the ugly. To be quite frank, some of these stories should never have seen the light of day. But I will tell you, of all the stories I have read so far, this one most certainly earns a place in the top two or three. It is just simply good.

Now nothing is perfect...that is for sure. There were a couple of very minor bumps in this story where I questioned the author's syntax. This was really no big deal though and was more a matter of personal taste than anything else I suppose, and it most certainly did not distract from the overall story.

If you enjoy the fantasy genre; this one will most certainly be a delight. The author has used this bit of work to act as a "teaser," to obviously get you to purchase more of his work. I must say that the author did well and chose a piece that certainly sold me and I can assure you that I will be reading more of this fellow and I will further predict that we will be hearing much more from this writer...at least we can hope so.

I am just now beginning to read fantasy fiction, and this was one of my first to read. I really enjoyed it! The author did a wonderful job of using words to describe the scenes, I could picture the backdrop in my mind. Add a little romance, jealousy, betrayal, and power, and this is well worth your time to read! Well done.

Sometimes you should read a story just once. When you read it the second time, you start seeing the flaws.

This is a very short story, barely 14 pages (at least that’s what Amazon says). I’ve read it for the first time few years ago and apparently I really liked it. This time the story wasn’t that good.

The smell of magic is about a witch hunter in training. Kelde is traveling with his master from village to village and uses his enhanced smell to Reveal future witches. The time had come for him to come back to his home village. He’s able to meet his family and his love.

Problem is, that during two years people change.

This story felt like an introduction to something bigger, but it seems there’s no continuation. It has a potential. Young protagonist, only starting his witch hunting life, he’ll have a lot to think of after the events in this story.

I like the idea of various magic skills having a specific smell. Person having a talent for shape shifting will have different scent than someone using fire magic.

For a story so short author manages to include everything that was needed to create a full image of situation. There was very little space for characters feeling though and maybe that’s why I didn’t like the story that much at the second reading.

When I got the story from Amazon it was still free, it’s not any more. I have to say, after reading it now, I wouldn’t recommend buying it.

This is the second short story I've read by the author. Like Completing the Cycle (Short Story), this doesn't disappoint.

Lewis has a gift for creating a vivid and engaging world within the confines of the very short story. Through the circumstances and plots of his stories are far from the ordinary, you never feel lost or confused. There's a real beauty in what he does. I wish he would allow himself to go for a bit longer. Like a diner after a bite or two of a wonderful dish, I found myself wanting more.

"The Smell of Magic" is written with a lyrical style that draws the reader in and gives the world of the story unexpected vividness. I first read this story years ago, and it has hung in my memory so well that I immediately wanted to post this review when I saw the listing on Amazon.
