Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS?Two board books that preschoolers will love, particularly when snuggled in the lap of a loved one. Each page is filled with a color photo of a tot responding in some way to the photographer. Toothy grins and yawns, bright eyes, pouts, and tears deliver reinforcement for the spare text that echoes what all parents (and photographers) say and play to get that picture-perfect response; e.g., "Look at the birdie" and "Peek-a-boo! I love you." Toddlers love looking at other children and these titles hold plenty of interest for them.?Susan Garland, Maynard Public Library, MA

"Smile!", by Roberta Grobel Intrater, is a delightful execution of a simple idea. This short book consists of close-up portraits of 12 babies of various ethnic groups. Along the bottom of the portraits run lines from a simple rhyme: "Look at the birdie / Come on, say cheese / Give me a smile / Will you, please?" etc.
Nothing groundbreaking here in terms of photography or text, just some good wholesome fun. Try incorporating the book into the popular "peek-a-boo" game!

My 9 month old loved the faces in this book, but I couldn't let him read it on his own because the cardboard isn't laminated very heavily. As soon as he started chewing on it, it bubbled up and started peeling away. Doesn't hold up as well as a number of other board books we have. Will keep it for when he's older.

This is my little sister's favorite book. I bought it for her before she turned two and it is still one of her favorites. She has me read it over and over again. The pictures of the babies are just adorable. I would highly recommend this book.

Pictures are cute but I expecting photos of faces expressing different emotions like "happy" or "sad" or "mad". The emotions in these pictures are ambiguous and tough to explain to a 1 year old.

I like that it shows babies of many ethnic backgrounds. I like that it shows babies with teeth, as it also helped me teach my baby what teeth are (leadinding into, don't bite with them!). I am not sure that the text necessarilly matched the expressions (the first page is "look at the birdie" but there is no bird in sight) which is why I knocked off a star.

This is a huge hit! The Grobel Intrater books are so much fun as babies love to see other babies. We get lots of smiling and giggling imitations and requests for repeated reading of this and all of her books.

Cute book. The pages are thinner than other board books we have, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Each page has a photo of a baby on it and the story is basically a group of things you might say while trying to get a child to smile for a camera.
There are just a few words per page, so you can let your baby's interest in the photos set the pace for reading.
