About the Author

Canadian Writer, Jaclyn Guenette, is a mother of three young children. She is a Registered Social Worker and Designated Capacity Assessor. Jaclyn is dedicated to working with families living with dementia and creating awareness and understanding of the disease.

Kathryn Harrison is a Business Professional-turned-Artist. She holds a Bsc, an MBA and a Fine Art Diploma. She brings together her science, business and art background in every book she creates. Stirred by her experience with her mother's dementia, Kathryn is committed to developing books to support families living with the disease.

A very awesome book cover, great colored pictures & proper font & writing style. A very well written children’s educational story book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational movie, an animated cartoon, PP presentation, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

This picture book explains dementia and discusses how young children may deal with it. The characters are presented as an animal family. The male child is called “Little Buddy” by his grandfather. At the beginning of the story, the boy tells of his favorite times with his grandfather, playing soccer, going for walks, taking camping trips, and playing games. But now his grandfather has dementia and often he forgets. Dad needs to come on their walks, grandpa can only watch the boy play soccer, and he no longer goes camping with them.
I like the way the author explains dementia as a brain sickness that hides thoughts and memories. There are tips on how to discuss the topic with children and a list of questions that are frequently asked. Even though many things have changed the boy knows how to express his love with smiles and hugs.
I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated picture book to open a difficult topic with young children, but the book is appropriate for any age. A portion of the book sales is donated for the study of Alzheimer’s disease.

He loves his Grandpa...

This is the story of a young boy who loves his grandfather and is his buddy. As grandpa gets older, he starts to lose his memory. The boy's parents explained dementia to the boy and told him it was nothing to be fearful about. They also told him to let the things go that he has forgotten unless it's something like his name.

My grandmother had dementia and she was disabled. I stayed with her when my aunt and her family went on vacation. She saw things from the past, always forgot who I was, and told tales of long ago and far away. One day she was telling me what everyone was getting for Christmas and when I told not to tell me what Jo Ann was getting (I didn't want to know about present early), she asked me: "Don't you like Jo Ann? She's a nice girl." That almost made me cry. Otherwise, we got along fine. I just listened and agreed for the most part. Life changes as people grow older.

The boy in this book used to play soccer with his grandpa and he went on camping trips with them. But as he forgets more things, he can't do those anymore. So the boy plays soccer by himself with his grandfather watching. And he remembers his grandfather whistling while camping and his big smile he'd have for his grandson and that keeps him company when they go camping.

He just reminds his grandpa that he's his buddy and they still whistle and love each other. That's what counts.

This is lovely book and an easy way to explain dementia to a small one. Even if no one in your family has it, you might meet someone in public that does. It will help them not be frightened.

The closeness between grandfather and grandson is sweet and undeniable. This was a great read.

Great illustrations - any child can identify him or herself with Buddy

The highest praise I can give this book is that I passed it on to a friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers because I thought it could be helpful for her to read with her children. I read it with my children, who don't know anyone with dementia, and it led us to have some great conversations. The illustrator's decision on dressing Buddy is genius - it's never mentioned in the story whether Buddy is male or female, and the clothing could go either way. To my daughters, Buddy was "clearly" a girl because "she" wears purple; truly, though, I think a young boy could just as easily say Buddy is "obviously" a boy. The simple but powerful language combined with the illustrations that allow all children to see themselves as Buddy make this book a great tool for talking to kids about dementia. I highly recommend this book, and thank illustrator Kathryn Harrison for gifting me a copy in exchange for a (very, very, very overdue) review.
