This knife would be a great choice for camping or hiking. It is just the right size and weight, has a many useful features and it's hard to beat the price. For extreme conditions or missions this knife would probably be a disappointment.
The sheath is 3 in. longer than the knife (13.25 in.). It has a few useful features not always offered with a knife this price. The belt loop is a fold over design secured with velcro. The fold over allows the sheath to be placed around up to a 2.5" belt without having to detach and feed the belt through it. It has an velcro adjustable retention strap with a snap closure. It is lined with a plastic liner to protect the seams and fabric from the edge. It has grommets with a cord at the tip to use to tie it down. There is a sturdy 5 in.strap mounted on the back side with a steel loop at one end and a snap closure at the other for MOLLE attachment. There is a detachable, expandable pouch on the front which can be used for accessories, and it comes with a 1 in. x 3 in. stone shaped sharpener. The length of the sheath makes it pretty long for belt carry. I'd prefer to mount it on my pack.
I like this knife for recreational use, but to carry a knife for survival or search and rescue I'd definitely want a more robust knife.
Would I buy it again? Hell Yeah!!
Beware of two things: First look close at the butt of the handle in the picture and you will see a weld point, which is on both sides and mine isn't color coordinated as pictured (it's silver), it makes it stand out against the all balck of the rest of the knife. It's not a big deal but it is a little odd to have a shinny dot, at first I thought it was a tiny sticker. Second, as other have stated, this is a S&W knife in name only, it's made by another U.S. based company from NC (I forget the name) and manufactured in China. That makes sense as I don't expect a firearms manufacturer to make knives but it's not clearly noted in the sales write up and the weld points aren't accurately pictred as well. Overall I like it for the $20 tag, now I just need to sharpen it.
I'm not giving it one star since it never claimed to be a throwing knife, and from other reviews it apparently functions well when treated gently.
However, any blade that cannot take one sideways hit against a board without shattering is not my kind of survival knife.
