The size of the 48" crate makes it look like a jail cell. It is certainly "heavy" but whether that translates to "heavy duty" we shall see. The coating on the bars is better than expected. The bars are hollow, half-inch diameter, and seem sturdy. My dog would not do well on the wire flooring, so I used the included metal pan as his floor instead.
Day 1: Louie locked in at 7am. First, he took a nap to build energy and mental alertness for his escape. By 8:32am he was biting the bars. It appears he was unsucessful. However, by 9:12am he figured out how to unlock the door and get out. Clearly the locks are worthless.
***** UPDATE ***** I borrowed an idea from another reviewer and used two luggage locks to secure the slide locks (see photo). Seems to work like a charm. Luggage locks are just small enough to fit, but just big enough to prevent slide movement.
Day 2: With slide locks in place, Louie spent most of the day biting and pawing at the door (the obvious weak spot, he learned on Day 1). However, he was unable to escape, and grudgingly accepted his fate as a caged animal.
So far, Louie has been unable to damage the crate, and with luggage locks in place, unable to escape. I will update this review if he figures out how to escape or damage the crate. Four stars. Would be five but for the crappy locks and bare-bones instructions.
I have a 1 year old Golden Retriever. She is bad to the bone! She can't be trusted alone for 5 minutes! She actually might be part goat because she eats EVERYTHING!!! Seriously after everything she has eaten, I don't know how she is still standing. No toy, shoe, pvc pipe, patios chair, couch, gate, seatbelt or patio umbrellas is safe around her!!! We have to watch her at all times because she is sneaky! Besides being naughty she has separation anxiety and was no match for the petstore bought metal and plastic airline crates. She destroyed three of them like she was the Incredible Hulk. I was desperate to find something that would work to save my house and keep my curious puppy safe.
I read some negative reviews about this crate, but honestly I was desperate so I purchased it. It was easy to put together. My husband did it and he is not a putter together of the things.
We have had the crate for 4 months and so far so good! It's still standing and more importantly so is my house. We call it the "tiger crate" because it looks like what the circus carries the Tigers in. It's kinda funny to hear my kids, realitives and friends tell my dog to go to her "tiger crate". Everyone usually chuckles over the size and seriousness of the crate when they see it for the first time. It is big! make sure you pick a spot and plan on keeping it there. We keep ours in the office.
I did need to add carabiner locks to the top and front because my dog figured out that if she jumped in the crate hard enough she could wiggle the latches and get out through the top. The latches are very secure so she really had to work at it to get out but she did. She might have magical powers?!? Still undecided about that!
The carabiners solved the problem and no more jailbreaks. They were $2 each at the gate are store. I put 4 on top and 3 to latch the front.
This crate has been a game changer for us. Hopefully it will work for you too. Good Luck! Naughty dog owners of the world unite!!!!
We have a chocolate lab that bent and tore out the bars within the first week of using this kennel. If you are purchasing this kennel because your dog has escaped others- this will be no different. It certainly did not live up to it's description of being "built to last a lifetime". More disappointing is when I contacted customer service to get a refund. I was told that it probably meant I kept the dog in the kennel too long (he hasn't been in for more than 2 hours) or he wasn't properly crate trained. The customer service was far from acceptable and they wouldn't do anything to accommodate us as their customers. Disappointing and not worth the money.
Or, in our case, the 45 minutes it took to run to the grocery store and back on the first day of use. A super friendly 12 yr old, 120 lb Saint Bernard broke the bottom hinge off and bent the top hinge post. She was able to bend the bars in the door solely by pressing against them with her head. She does have separation anxiety, but she's not destructive. She gets into the fridge and eats her feelings. We were trying to keep her contained solely to ensure she didn't eat something that could hurt her.
I contacted the seller and was told that pet damage is not covered, so they will neither refund nor replace the kennel. They said "100's of rescues use this kennel without issue" and that rescues from all over Florida come to them to buy these kennels in bulk, although they weren't willing to provide any examples of these 100's of rescues. This kennel is NOT safe or secure. We will stop using them immediately and will greatly discourage our rescue partners from using them as well. If a sweet senior Saint Bernard can destroy one that quickly, I can't imagine what a younger, stronger dog could do.
