The Ceramic side (1500 grit) is absolutely amazing for putting a razor edge on just about anything. I know many knife enthusiasts dislike pull through sharpeners. I think that's just because carbide sharpeners are too aggressive and remove too much metal without providing a sharp edge. With this tool, if you are gentle and judicious with your use of the carbide side, you can get a ridiculously sharp edge with very little technique.
You'll want to use just one or two swipes through the carbide to reset the edge on your knife to 46 degrees, then about 20 swipes through the Ceramic. Also, put a couple drops of water on the Ceramic, because the best sharpening is actually provided by a water slurry on the surface of the Ceramic, not a dry stone. The only technique you need is to keep the blade as vertical as possible as you smoothly pull the blade across the stone. Don't roll the edge out of vertical, because you'll just be dulling the edge and taking off that 46 degree point.
The fine side is FANTASTIC !!!
The course side is problematic.
Sharpening a knife requires a proper sharpener - followed by proper honing.
The Tungsten Carbide cutters are a poor excuse for sharpening and create more problems than they solve other than in emergency situations. Don't use them unless you're stranded in the woods with a totally dull knife. They sort of work but they'll also sort of screw up your knife. You'll end up with an uneven mess of a sharpening.
For honing a pre-sharpened knife - the fine honing rods are excellent way to hone any knife. Ignore the instructions about 3 pulls - pull knife thru rods 10 times one way then rotate unit 180 degrees then pull knife thru 10 times opposite way. You'll be able to shave with knife.
I keep one of these with me to hone my knife when I travel.
I try to make my reviews engaging and useful. Please click helpful if you thought this review was worthwhile. Thanks!
Glad I got this. Nice to know I'll be able to use (maybe) when I get a better set of knives.

Glad I got this. Nice to know I'll be able to use (maybe) when I get a better set of knives.

I've used mine for everything from simply maintaining optimal blade sharpness on EDC knives to bringing old, nicked and tarnished blades back from the dead - turning them into crispy-sharp and useful tools again.
I loved and was so impressed w/ mine that I promptly returned to Amazon to snap up 3 more, "just in case" I (God forbid) lose one...or one grows legs and walks away...or a friend/neighbor borrows one and enjoys it so much they want their own, etc.
Bottom line: Effective, easy to use, dirt cheap!
First off I will say that this tool will not replace what a whetstone would do, so don't expect any miracles. For those of you who are like me and cannot keep the proper angle on a whetstone, then this tool may be for you.
But I can say it does put a razors edge on my Kershaw Speedsafe. It also renewed the edge on my Gerber Combat Lifesaver, but it only barely put an edge on an old dull Gerber EZ-Out that I found laying in a street.
Depending on how dull it is you will discover you need to apply pressure accordingly. There is no magic formula, only experience will tell you.
I will be sure to always put this Smith's CCKS 2-Step knife sharpener in my go bag.

However, paring knives not so much. The protective area of the sharpener prevents getting the blade at the handle close enough for a full sharpen. Eventually, every knife will be a filet knife with this.
Having said that, it's still a nice product.

I'm really happy with the result. It feels like all my blades are sharper than when i got them.
And remember, dull blades cause accidents, so keep them sharp.

I was a little skeptical over how effective this gadget would be to sharpen my knives however I was pleasantly surprised. I will no longer be using my old school sharpening stone as this seems to do an equally good job.
Nice touches:
- Rubber bits to grip onto the table/surface when in use
- Textured grip
Cons:
- Very difficult to clean the inner part of the gadget.
Instructions:
1. Draw the knife blade through the 'Coarse' end a few times.
2. Turn it upside down.
3. Draw the blade through the 'Fine' end a few times.
4. Wipe the blade and off you go!

Little touch but the ends are rubberised to allow stable resting on a work surface when in use.
