I originally got this as a portable sharpener I could throw in a bag or in the car if I was going away for a while and thought I might need a touch-up on a blade. However, since then when I was using exclusively water stones and glass stones to sharpen my knives, I have picked up a Spyderco Sharpmaker, which is an awesome sharpener. I'd rather bring the Sharpmaker with me than this any day of the week. Now yes, it's hard to compare the two, but for the money I think you're better off spending a bit more and buying something like the Sharpmaker. That's my personal opinion, and some people might think that a $50 sharpening kit isn't for them, but I highly recommend at least checking it out and seeing if something like that would suit your needs. I am not endorsed by Spyderco, I'm just a huge fan of that product after sharpening all sorts of knives for the better part of fifteen years. It will bring even my cheap-o utility blades to shaving sharp in a matter of minutes. Likewise, you could purchase just the coarse stones for the Sharpmaker, and sharpen your knife freehand, getting it just as sharp if not sharper than this handheld will do for you with a little bit of practice.
Regardless, the Smith's sharpener has it's place and it is pretty good.
A mistake many people will make, and wind up ruining the sharpener, is to try to press harder to sharpen faster or better.Read more ›
I also used it on several different pair of scissors. My regular kitchen shears (just for opening stuff), my office shears (used for paper and etc), and my fabric shears. I noticed the most improvement in my kitchen scissors. It did work well on my office/paper scissors but needed to be sharpened again within a few weeks. Nice alternative to a sharpening stone.
It also worked on a pair of old scissors that I was about to through away.
I'm very happy with it.

Pretty good sharpener but the steels DO NOT TOUCH for some reason. If they did it would work much better. It also has carbide and ceramic blades to sharpen blades that are useless. Read morePublished 18 months ago by bendari
For the price i guess it is ok, but i would not buy again. You get what you pay for and you will not mistake the edge this makes for anything sharp. Read morePublished 22 months ago by Ryan
