Took a "sneak peek" when it arrived (a grandmother's prerogative!), and must say I was very unimpressed with the cheap plastic pieces given that part of what sold me on it was the "Smithsonian" name on the box - I'm a bit surprised that such a reputable institution would license its name for something so flimsy. After reading the instructions, I was a little concerned about whether he'd be able to manage this on his own, and should've listened to that inner voice. He apparently attempted it, got frustrated, and put it aside for his dad to help him with. My son does a super job with his three sons (and now an infant daughter's been added to the mix), but opportunities for one-on-one time don't come often, and during the times that they have been able to grab some alone time, he told me our grandson is more interested in spending time bonding over his Snap Circuits kits than this spider.
So, I guess I'd just caution that you may not want to just hand this to an 8 year old unless he has an adult readily available to give an assist, and recognize in advance that you're not going to be receiving a kit of the highest quality.
