SMITHSONIAN TREASURES OF AMERICAN HISTORY tops off at 120 pages, the artifacts divided into four sections: Creativity and Innovation, American Biography, National Challenges and American Identity. Included in the first section are Edison's 1879 light bulb, the ruby slippers and Scarecrow costume from THE WIZARD OF OZ, a Bell telephone from 1876, crayola crayons, an 1888 Kodak camera, nylon stockings from the 1930s and so on. Being a historian, the National Challenges section was especially appealing to me since it featured the top hat Lincoln wore the night he was assassinated, a uniform worn by George Washington in the 1790s, the Fort McHenry 'Star-Spangled Banner,' FDR's 'Fireside Chat' microphone, etc.
In short, Kendrick and Liebhold's book is a wonderful introduction and visual guide to American history sure to appeal to many. Recommended.
