About the author

Inspired by her grandmother, a regency historical romance author, Sally loved romance from a very young age. After all, she decided to turn her hobby to a professional level.
She was born in the United Kingdom, of an American father and a British mother. When she was ten years old, they moved as a family to Chicago, where Sally made her dream come true to study Literature at the University.
She is married to a wonderful man who gave her two adorable daughters to be proud of. A lovely Labrador is part of the family as well.
In her free time, Sally prefers to spend time with her family. She loves arts, especially theater and opera. Also, she is a big fan of Jane Austen.

Roger, son of the Duke of Norfield, is burned badly in a house fire that killed his father and left him scarred. Having hid from prying eyes for 2 years, he now finds himself pushed to the fore with the upcoming marriage arranged by his father before his death. Amelia Worthington, daughter of the Earl of Ereswell, also has hid in the country after the murder of her fiancé. She, too, is taken against her will to London to marry a man she has never met. Both have scars- his on the outside, hers inward, and must learn to overcome their reservations and fears to form a new family.
A snake—make that 2 snakes—enters into our little paradise and strikes with sudden viciousness.
CRITIQUE: Great descriptive introduction that grabs the reader’s attention and pulls him/her right into it from the opening paragraphs. There are other nerve-wracking events along the way. The twists and turns this story takes keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, waiting to see what happens next!
Initially, Amelia was childish, self-centered, and rather hopeless. She gradually grows throughout the book to become a more mature version of herself. Roger, too, has his work cut out for him, and he puts his hand to the till and get’s busy changing himself into a responsible and caring husband. (Good character development). This wonderful and clean story will be appreciated and enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Spoilers: I do not like my hero to cry. That really bothered me. I know he lost his father several months before and maybe bring tears to his eyes but not rolling down his cheeks. And not just once??? That is a bit more sensitive than I can handle. I would have the poor guy in tears all the time. He just did not seem like duke material to me. He just seem to be all over the place to me. I did like he was honorable and nice. The heroine had a really traumatic experience in a carriage and yet she had no problems getting in a carriage. She spent all of her time in the country since the experience, where did she become comfortable in a carriage.
I really want to give this book 5 stars. The story is full of emotions. The plot flows well and the characters are well-developed. What begins as two sad tales combines into a story of slow friendship and redeeming love leading to a HEA. It was almost a complete delight to read.
However, because of the need for more careful editing, I felt I needed to give only 4 stars. The errors aren't too distracting but there are quite a few.

Roger & Amelia’s wedding was a marriage of convenience, & not a love match, so I am not sure why their parents would have felt the couple was lying to them about their happiness. They barely knew each other! I have to admit I would have preferred the couple to have spent more time with one another. Although I loved Roger, I was not so keen on Amelia, especially her “cold” treatment towards her parents. I felt in the beginning that she was quite spoilt & petulant. So glad she was nice to the Dowager Duchess & Roger! There was no surprises as to whom the villains were, although I am not convinced there was not an accomplice. I was convinced that Norfield Manor was the name of Roger’s country home (where the fire was), but it seems I am wrong & it was the name of his London home. Finally, I am disappointed the author did not choose a more English name for Amelia & Roger’s son.
Overall, this was a nice easy read, with a little bit of excitement. It was a clean read, although readers may want to be aware that there is a kidnapping scene & one fight scene.

As mentioned in other reviews there are American spellings, (which you either have to learn to ignore, or avoid American authors) and a number of editing slips, which those reading for pleasure instead of reviewing will probably read right past. However, better editing/proofreading would help.
On to the story itself: Amelia is rather self-indulgent at first - her attitude towards her parents is not typical for the period - but she does some growing up, and comes to realise that they were right. Both she and Roger have baggage from their past, and the usual (for the period) problems in communicating, but all ends well.
Concentrate on the story as it unfolds and you should find this book enjoyable - I did, and so have others.

The characters of Lady Amelia Worthington and Roger St. John, the Duke of Norfield, are likable and both have past traumas. Can these two wounded people come together or will treachery tear them apart?
I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.

I received an ARC copy from the author and I am leaving an honest and voluntary review.
