Even with suspected murder, there is humor at every turn, not the slapstick kind or the wisecracking snark of new, but good old-fashioned, subtle "Immy" speak that had me smiling often and laughing out loud more than once.
While reading the story, I was pleased to learn about potbelly pigs and bull riding. Both topics well researched and presented with an insider's knowledge.
The easygoing writing style is deceptive as Ms. George stays below the radar while spinning her tale of mayhem and deception. This is not a "Cozy" as I had expected. The scenes speed up quickly and the pace of the story makes it impossible to put down.
What's up next? Broke: An Imogene Duckworthy Mystery.
Immy takes Marshmallow the pig to the vet for his shots and a check-up. She finds out that Gretchen the pig has accidentally been killed. Amy JoBeth has taken to the tornado shelter - she is devastated by the loss of her favorite pig. While this has been happening, half the town has come down with food poisoning. Could it possibly be from eating Jerry’s Jerky? Immy decides to investigate. She heads to Jerry’s Jerky and finds no one there. So she heads to the house and finds owner - Tinnie Bucket sick and Rusty Bucket missing. It bothers Immy that the door to the smokehouse is open. Being a wannabe PI and nosy person, Immy goes and takes a look. She is really sorry she did. She finds a dead Rusty hanging from a hook and the body of Gretchen the pig. Things do not look good for Amy JoBeth – she is arrested for Rusty’s murder at her own wedding shower.
Things to ponder: Why did health inspector shut down Jerry’s Jerky? Was it really Gretchen’s body in the smokehouse? Where is the dead man’s wife?
This was a fun read. I found myself laughing out loud while reading this delightful book. I love the small town feel the author has given the story. It makes you want to pay a visit to Saltlick, TX and hang out with Immy and her family and friends. The story is well – plotted and it quickly became a page turner. I needed to find out whodunit. So if you like your mystery with cute kids and George Clooney’s favorite animal, then you should be reading Smoke.
