Smoked by Patrick Quinlan secures your attention like a rusty nail being driven in your forehead. Populated by a number of people you would not like to meet off the page, this debut thriller works its way into your mind and can deny you a good night's sleep. I write this bleary eyed and tired after tearing through this book in one session. It is 5.30 in the morning, I am drinking coffee, and wondering how to get through my day. I suggest, seriously, that you do not start this book in bed if you are hoping to get some sleep. This is good hard thriller writing, merciless, and mercifully free of cliche. I will read more of this writer. The trilogy that makes up the Stolen Millions story has a new fan in me, and I may break my reading rule which says don't read another book straight away by the same author. People overuse the work addictive, but I am going to use it about Quinlan. It reeks of modern film noir, and reflects traditional film noir. I assume it will make it to the screen sometime and it is sad that Humphrey Bogart or Robert Mitchum can't be in it. Humour is in there as well as violence; credible characters who do almost incredible things are in there too. This is a first rate ripping yarn with pace and great style.

This began with a bang but then seemed to wither a bit, only picking up again in the second half of the book. Characters are big and brassy and the dialogue runs smoothly. This is an enjoyable easy read and suffice to say I am now moving on to his next one The Drop Off..

Also thrown in the shopping basket was a big bag of those individually wrapped chewy fruity flavour sweets you don't seem to find any more basically as they're 98% plastic 2% added flavourings and 4 packs of porno playing cards for my colleagues back home (1 deck even had she-males in it) Completely judged it by it's cover and I'm glad I did. Great storyline, had me so engrossed I got sunburnt.
