This is a re-release of the Jonny Lang debut CD which was initially released independently in 1995. Originally billed as "Kid" Jonny Lang and the Big Bang, the "kid" has been rightfully dropped from the title on this re-release.
Lang's recent CDs and live concert tour performances proves he can rock with the best of them. In a rock & roll rite of initiation, he recently opened up for the Rolling Stones in their NYC concert and later jammed with them during their encore. He's no longer "the kid". Welcome Mr Jonny Lang!
This CD immediately proved that Jonny Lang can sing AND play guitar. Lang's talent does not get lost in overproduction and his simpler and more pure form of electric and acoustic blues is highly evident. Two of my favorite tracks on this CD, "Changes" and "E-Train" are written by Ted "Lightnin' Boy" Larsen who also plays guitar and does background vocals. The acoustic and electric synergy between Lang and Larsen (and the rest of the Big Bang) is very highly charged and unfortunately unmatched on Lang's subsequent CDs since the Big Bang band doesn't perform on Lang's other CDs.
Lang's seemingly aged voice never made him sound like a kid, but age and experience will no doubt, only add more credibility to this young man's blues and lyrics. His already awesome guitar playing will only get better with more experience.
As fans, we can really enjoy the process..and this great CD.

This is a re-issue of Lang's first CD issued on an independent label. So, it is true that this is a high school kid playing the blues, because that's exactly what it is. Judge this CD in its original context - an unknown blues talent cuts his first CD on an indie label that gets noticed by the big labels. This is not where Jonny is at today.

This is not Jonny Lang at his best -- his best is probably mostly available when you see him in person. At very nearly his best on his album Lie to Me, Jonny is backed by absolutely masterful musicians while playing fantastic arrangements.
That said, this album of Jonny in his younger days is still better than most of what is coming onto the market these days. Smokin' is enjoyable listening, if nothing else. If you're like me, you'll be happy just to have some new tunes to listen to. If Jonny continues to improve and mature as a blues artist, as I expect he will, anyone who buys this album will be glad to have a piece of his history in the making.

Very bluesy - slower than his later releases. Hopefully he will come back to this style as he matures and after he's done experimenting with other sounds.

this kid is great. i have several of his cds and they all are great. this kid can sing. i listen to him at work, in the car and on my ipod.

this is good sounds, not hostil or booming. you can hear the words and understand what he sings. he as always has a good band backing him up.

i would buy this again should something happen to the cd that i have now.
P.S. I loaned my CD to a coworker and he lost it, he bought me another. Lol

I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Jonny Lang and his brand of music. This was his first cd and a brilliant entrance into the world of music. The boy is a very talented writer and musician.
