I was a kid lovesick for horses. I was lucky enough to be able to ride and spent every waking hour with those ponies. I read every horse book I could get my paws on and played endlessly with my Breyers. I don't know if it was my knowledge of horses and their behavior that made this book so vivid in imagery for me, or if it truly is written so well, but reading it again 30 years later, my heart is just as full. It is a must have for every lovesick horse kid out there and I will treasure it always and pass it down to my son. Thank you Will James

I loved this story as a kid, so bought it for one of my grandchildren. The story of Smoky, especially the beginning, about a little horse growing up on the open range about a hundred years ago, is interesting because it's based on close observation by a horseman. I'm not sure my eight-year-old grandson will navigate the cowboy "lingo" as well as my generation could, but it's an honest story, and he's an honest kid, so it's well worth a shot.
