Editorial Reviews

The Smooth Side of Soul features Najee at the peak of his form. Highlights include Najee's romantic re-imagining of the Ne-Yo snash "When You're Mad", his collaboration with R&B icon Phil Perry on the upbeat "Just to Fall In Love", the funky "Foo Foo She Lollipop" and much more.

Briefly, I had some reservations about reviewing this particular album due to the respect that I have for "Najee" (the artist) and his work. Notably, I was rather bothered with the lack of continuity and the song selection process, which determined what cuts should be placed on the noted album. Unfortunately, "Najee" blinked. More to the point, "Najee" sorely missed his opportunity to pay homage to some of the late great saxophone players such as "Dexter Gordon", the legendary "John Coltrane" as well as other notable horn players such as trumpeter "Donald Byrd" (who passed earlier this year)and "Miles Davis."

Specifically, the songs such as "In The Clouds" and "Sound For Sore Ears" were perfect to successfully feature his versatility in planning, developing, and disseminating some "heavy" jazz tunes rather compromising those songs with his customary "smooth jazz" renditions. Thus, the noted selections should have been actually placed on a separate album and released @ a later time (ideally after more compatible songs were formulated). As a former jazz DJ from the Bay Area, I contend one of the biggest mistakes that artists commonly make is failing to thoroughly ponder and contemplate over what material is most suitable in regards to the given project.

Remember, "jazz" is a hybrid of passion and long suffering. The above fore mentioned songs had the beginnings of an unheard struggle. The remaining songs felt like "fill-ins" in comparison. Lastly, I contend if "Najee" and his music truly desires to survive "past the ages" (not just another album that will be recycled), then more time and consideration must be allocated in regards to his next project.

Najee creates a melodic tune of smooth jazz sounds in his current release. I enjoy the sumptuous vocals, which he's added more so than prior vocalsits. This CD should be enjoyed by smooth jazz as well as R&B fans alike!

Excellent, his producers are great creating tracks Najee excels in. Namely Darren Rahn, Jeff Lober and Chris big dog Davis.Who is the second coming of recently departed George Duke. Mr Davis has produced songs on three of Najees last four CDs.

If you don"t have Najee in your collection this is the one to start with. It is a CD that shows how talented this man is. He puts down the sax and picks up the flute to show just how smooth he real is playing Jazz.

Owning all of the Najee CDs I can get my hands on, this one pales in comparision to so many. Sounds like it was a desperate cut to release a new CD just because.
