Editorial Reviews

Five time Downbeat Poll winner Gary Smulyan brings his baritone sax to the forefront of the classic jazz organ trio with Mike LeDonne on organ, Peter Bernstein on guitar and Kenny Washington on drums. Most of the tunes are originals written for the date by Smulyan along with 3 compositions written by and for the late great jazz organist Don Patterson. Gospel inspired organist Rhoda Scott's Pistachio and a funky uptempo waltz version of the 60's pop hit Sunny round out the session.

The pairing of baritone sax and Hammond organ trio probably isn't a combination that would readily come to mind for most jazz listeners. But it works well here, with Smulyan backed up by Hammond B3 organ (Mike LeDonne), guitar (Peter Bernstein), and drums (Kenny Washington). The eight tracks convey plenty of energy, a combination of bop, blues, and one ballad. The doubling of the melody with bari/guitar or bari/organ is an effective approach in these arrangements.
Those who have seen Smulyan perform know that he doesn't look much bigger than the horn he's playing, but you'd never know it from the power and confidence he puts into this session. In the history of jazz recording, there haven't been very many truly great solo artists on the bari. In Gary Smulyan, it's great to have someone who belongs in that elite cadre and is still producing great material.
Good liner notes, with info on the artist and the tunes chosen for this album.

If you are a hard core jazz lover in the vein of gerry mulligan, Harry Carney, Pepper Adams, Sahib Shahib you'll love this CD. It will take you back to artistry long gone, and very much missed.
