Harvey Mandel is one of those curiosities in the music world. A man possessed with great talent as a guitarist--who played with John Mayall, The Rolling Stones, The Charlie Musselwhite Blues Band, Canned Heat, Pure Food & Drug Act (his own band), Arthur Lee/Love, plus many solo albums under his own name--and he's still relatively unknown. His name isn't listed in any of the All Music Guide books in any genre for example--hmmm. If you're reading this you're probably familiar with Mandel's albums, so this review is aimed more for those newcomers interested (hopefully) in late '60s/early'70s instrumental (primarily) music from a true unsung master of the guitar. I gave this set 5 "stars"--probably one of those "stars" is for memory's sake for the good times back then when music was changing and morphing so fast--but the best of the music across these albums contains many high points which elevates this collection beyond an "average/okay/it's pretty good" rating. To each his own on how you hear this music in 2015. Music has obviously changed a lot since the late'60s/early '70s.

This box set collects Mandel's first five (good sounding) albums (but there's no mention of remastering), plus a sixth (78 minutes with okay/decent sound) previously unreleased album from a (pretty nice) live jam/gig at The Matrix in the '60s, each album in a cardboard jacket that recreates the original album cover. The graphics for the sixth "jam" album fit in nicely with the other album covers. (Arguably) the only album not included from this period is "Shangrenade" (recorded for another label), which is well worth owning if you like what you hear on these albums.

Among the guitarists who left Chicago to bring blues to San Francisco, Harvey Mandel is one of the giants. His distinctive guitar style is there from the beginning. Someday, it might be nice to see the work he did with Charlie Musselwhite, Barry Goldberg, John Mayall's USA Union, the Rolling Stones, Canned Heat and other top bands of the '60s gathered up into a companion volume to this outstanding box set. In Northern California, he is a legend because his version of "Cristo Redentor" was the first and last song played on the one-time free-form radio station, KZAP. The "midnight to six" disc jockey Andy Emert snuck in the Mandel track so it was the last song played on the station, by then a classic rock pioneer, before the playlist switched to country(!). The wonderful music on this collection includes his version of the Duke Pearson/Donald Byrd jazz classic, "Cristo Redentor," Horace Silver's "Senor Blues," "Wade in the Water" (which was one of the first San Francisco tracks to feature congas), "Before Six" (featuring an incendiary organ solo by Stephen Miller of the Elvin Bishop Group & Linn County), "Baby Batter" (showcasing the masterful keyboard work of Howard Wales of AB Skhy and Jerry Garcia/"Hooteroll" fame) and "The Lark" (with long-time collaborator Charlie Musselwhite). Mandel has never stopped his innovations on the guitar, but this collction of his early work is truly a must have for guitar aficionados.

Yes, about time that Mr. Mandel got his due, and this box does it, I was fortunate enough to see PURE FOOD AND DRUG ACT at the old LIGHTHOUSE on the Beach in L. A., and sitting in was the great SHUGGIE OTIS, suffice it to say, a night of fantastic guitar. Harvey was great enough to get serious consideration to replace MICK TAYLOR when he left the STONES, so that begins to tell younger fans just how well he was thought of by his musical peers, this box set shows you why, I can heartily concur with the cat's review, just get this if you value a real underappreciated talent who never got his due back in the day. It's killer stuff.
