As a drag racing fan, it is probably the best piece of cinema ever devoted to any part of the subject, as is 'Heart Like a Wheel'
The acting was never questionable and the screenplay was streamlined and able to deliver 40 years of racing history, two careers in depth and two completely different social lives in one pleasant sitting.
Great film, make sure to remind your non racing friend about the advances to everyone's vehicles due to guys like these.
Great film, period correct, no glaring Hollywood errors.
This movie has lots of vintage footage, which I like- compare to the kind of bluish hue in Rush. I'll tell you what I thought- I absolutely loved it. What an enjoyable time spent watching it. The human drama here is different from Rush but no less compelling. I thought the casting was ideal; the acting was great all around; I enjoyed all the vintage footage, and I really liked getting to know the men behind the names, their personal stories and struggles. This IS NOT, let me be clear, a movie for race fans. This is just a great movie. If you are a race fan you will especially love it, but this movie stands as it is, on it's own as a story that is worth telling. This would be a great date night or family movie- movies like this are why we invented popcorn. I admit I didn't have high expectations going in- boy was I ever wrong. It is so refreshing to have a compelling movie like this that is such that you can just sit back and let it transport you into a great story; unlike Rush, this isn't really about losing or winning- when you see it you will realize it is about something more important in people. I cannot believe how much I enjoyed it. .
This is a must own for the gear heads, speed freaks, race fanatics and automotive history buffs. It gives a good history of drag racing and the impact that the players had on the sport.
It chronicles the impact of the supporters and sponsors and their contribution to the sport of drag racing.
THOUGHTS: Plays more like a TV movie of the week than a feature film, but is still worth a look; especially if you're a fan of these men, the drag racing culture or grew up in the 1970's. The actors look amazingly like their real-life counterparts and do a really good job. Story is a grab bag of highlights and only really scratches the surface of these two men. As a kid whose father was intimately involved in the sport during this era, watching SNAKE & MONGOO$E brought back a flood of adrenaline-fueled flashbacks and warm, pleasant, half-forgotten memories. Technically, the film is a nicely done representation of the era. Thankfully the producers & director chose not to re-create the races themselves with stunt cars or, worse yet, silly CGI. Instead we are treated to vintage TV & film snippets of the actual heats and events. Nicely done. Spot-on hairstyles, clothing, set decorations, motorhomes and all of the old school racing machines brought a huge smile to my face. The story, as told, is somewhat superficial but it shows the importance of these two racing giants, how they established the groundwork that legitimized the sport and helped bring drag racing from a backroad hobby for greasy punk kids & hoodlums into the most popular motorsport of the tumultuous 1970's and 80's.
THE BLU-RAY: While a mostly bare effort, Anchor Bay's hi-def release of SNAKE & MONGOO$E is still a solid one. Being a newly shot movie, the transfer is good, with an excellent picture and strong, level sound. Only extra is a short "Making of" featurette.Read more ›
