This is one of the very few works to come out of the Covid crisis that deserves to be called journalism. Its nine well-sourced chapters document the origin and propagation of the "lockdown" mentality that swept the globe in 2020, and that continues to resonate with us today. Mr. Senger takes up his brief with a grim determination to get to the bottom of this question: who originated the lockdowns, who cheered them on, and who collaborated with the flawed thinking that put them in place. The answers are not pleasant. Yet if we wish to understand the world in 2022, we cannot shrink from facing them.
The writing style is fluid, clear, and cogent. Unlike many writers of contemporary events, Mr. Senger has no need to garnish his phrases with hyperbole, because the material is dramatic enough on its own. We can be confident that the book's thesis will be vindicated in the coming years.

This is a must read book about a historical event of our times.

Like many people, in March 2020 I was terrified of the Covid19 virus. I went into prep mode to protect my family and the business I am CEO of and I even volunteered to help source ventilators.
By April I knew something was wrong and by the end of April was a vocal critic of the lockdowns.
This important and well researched book explores the origins of the lockdown and other authoritarian policies - especially with the focus on the CCP and the origins of these policies.

This is a key work that everyone should read and be familiar with.

Some important takeaways from this book that you would not expect is the fact that while it's an open secret that the communist regime in control of the government in China have been responsible for some of the world's most heinous atrocities in human history, it's not so well known how deep and strong their influence over Western institutions have proven to be. It is not well known that the entire US CIA network in China was destroyed. It is not well known that both the Right Wing and the Left Wing were extremely well deceived and manipulated by propaganda and manufactured evidence produced by the CCP. The Communist Chinese Party might be the first entity in the history of the world to successfully leverage reverse reputation marketing in the sense that because they know the West does not trust them, they have been able to exploit that through fake whistleblowers and fake dissidents to pull off the ultimate deception. These techniques, as Michael's book painstakingly illustrates with nearly 600 well-researched, verifiable references, were all for the sole purpose of waging weaponless war on the world and emerge as the #1 economic superpower in the world. It is indeed a fact that in 2020, the only country who's GDP did not shrink was the economy of China. This wasn't by chance. This was a carefully planned, highly controlled, meticulously orchestrated initiative to dismantle the very psychological foundation of Europe, the United States and the world.

This information is incredibly important to have because it underpins a lot of the policies that have come out of our own institutions in government, academia and even corporate America. Even the capitulation of religious organizations to the so-called "NPIs" (non-pharmaceutical interventions) based on non-western, CCP-produced "data" for supposedly eradicating an upper respiratory virus. It's all based on a lie, and this lie resulted in countless damaged and destroyed lives. The explosion of famine and suicides. The economic toll running into the Trillions, ending family businesses that had thrived for decades around the world. Employing billions. Educating and feeding the next generation. All of this was damaged or destroyed based on a lie that was sold by Xi Jinping's CCP and purchased, whole--outright, uncritically--by the academic, scientific, journalistic and political institutions of Europe, America and much of the rest of the world.

In places where people still have a voice in the matter. Where elections still count. Where we can choose where to spend our money. Which employers to work for. Where we choose to send our donations as part of a religious affiliation... We need to engage in a dialog with as many people as we can to make sure they understand This Lie, where it come from and why it was told. It is vital that we learn why our society discarded more than a century of proven Western Medical Science and basic reason to adopt a regressive, hyper-moralized, totalitarian approach to public health protection. Because the fate of the world depends on this generation fighting to reveal the truth, and do what we can to either get policies changed, or, change the people making policies.

This is a must buy, must read. My personal hope is to see this book translated into numerous languages so that it can be read all over the world. I want to get this book into as many hands as possible so that they can stop playing the game, and playing right to into the hands of a regime that is successfully carrying out a quiet, international revolution where Xi Jinping becomes chairman of the world.

Dragon Charm: How General Secretary Xi Punk’d the West

Mr. Senger provides a thrilling account of how, in early 2020, under the wise leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping, the Chinese Communist Party conducted “one of the most audacious psychological operations in all recorded history.” Indeed it was. Less than a century ago, propagandists could do little more than distribute leaflets and shout into microphones. General Secretary Xi, with righteous wisdom in our modern age, perceived the unbridled potential of globalized social media, and duly exploited it.

Utilizing a multi-pronged strategy of curated videos (some from cities hundreds of miles from Wuhan, ha!), Twitter bot swarms, and carefully leaked testimony from patriotic doctors like Li Wianlang, the Chinese Communist Party successfully elevated the threat level of a novel SARS virus from ‘angry panda’ to ‘vicious grizzly’ in the minds of billions around the world. They achieved this most spectacularly in the West, especially among its aging populations of decadent Facebook “fear porn” consumers. Sars-CoV-2 infected their minds before their bodies; a testament to the power wielded by ascendant masters of modern information technology.

The real coup de grâce though, they executed via Western Science. After decades of collaboration, benevolently afforded H-1B graduate labor, and liquid funding for lab research (you’re welcome, EcoHealth Alliance!), by 2020 the Chinese Communist Party had successfully ingratiated itself into Western academia and the broader international public health bureaucracy attached to it. Thus, when the pandemic broke, and noble Chinese scientists spouted data extolling the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs e.g. lockdowns, social distancing, mask mandates, ventilator usage etc.), Western Scientists---heirs to England’s Royal Society and its ruthlessly empirical motto Nullius In Verba, “take nobody’s word for it”---just… believed them. Prepared for a torrent of skepticism, Party Scientists encountered a trickle from their Western counterparts.

As Mr. Senger summarizes:

“In a matter of weeks, the world had dismissed a century of epidemiological research and adopted the model of the Chinese Communist Party. The WHO’s pandemic response plan, updated as recently as October 2019, and its national counterparts in every developed nation, were tossed aside.”

Ha! Hell yeah they were! This book is a 4-star excellent chronicle! -1 star for Mr. Senger’s reactionary biases against the Chinese Communist Party and its wise leader General Secretary Xi Jinping.

The last two lost years were strange, especially with how fast all things closed, how most governments in the west copied each other with few deciding not to lockdown, ban gatherings etc (Sweden being a good exception despite being pilloried in the west). Perfectly sane reasonable people became afraid of their neighbours, stepped off the sidewalk when you passed by and willingly stood in lines to get into banks/grocery stores, put on masks and have "non-essential" businesses closed. It was the strangest phenomenon in my entire life. This book explains how it happened and how we let it happen. This book explains it in easy prose that is face paced and a page turner. Basically we were all duped by one country and one man. He also explains the rat race we all got into where governments scared people into accepting a loss of liberty for "safety" and that how we all fell into the 2 weeks to flatten curve line. It is a must read for all.

The CCP effectively put Western governments into a bind; through their soft influence of world institutions such as the WHO and a remarkably aggressive propaganda campaign circa March 2020, a narrative was introduced and welded into the public consciousness - you must lockdown and social distance in order to save lives. From that point on, to differ from the policy of lockdowns was to go against the prevailing narrative.

Boris Johnson, whom I voted for under the belief that he was a libertarian, was initially reluctant to lockdown, and this is well documented with various media appearances from himself and his closest scientific advisors (Vallance and Whitty) in Feb and early March. Then, something switched, and the policy did a 180. This book details the influence campaign meticulously carried out by the CCP. It is fluent and well researched, with over 500 references, and for me one of the best pieces of investigative journalism to emerge from this period.

The large majority of people in western countries spend a good chunk of their day consuming media, either through their phone, TV or radio. In the UK the average is 4 hours looking at the phone screen. That is 28 hours of every week whereby an individual is susceptible to propaganda, such as the campaign detailed in this book, especially on the Chinese platform of TikTok. The CCP utilised a digital army to carry it out. The UK has something similar with their Nudge Unit (BIT), but it is a far cry from the tens of thousands of paid workers in China.

For me, the book helped in putting the events into more context. 'A State of Fear' by Laura Dodsworth is a fantastic piece of journalism about the fear campaign deployed by the UK government, in order to ensure compliance with their new lockdown laws. Snake oil is much wider in its scope, and offers a convincing explanation of the 'why' that I felt was missing from Lauras book. It doesn't, however, detract from her book, in fact quite the opposite. I am looking forward to more books to help piece together the events in an increasingly accurate light. I have also just finished 'The Psychology of Totalitarianism' which is a further tool in the arsenal to discover what truly happened.

In line with some other reviews on here, I do feel that too much credit is given to Xi as an ultimate conspirator. There was a definite trend before the events in this book, towards more top down government control. 9/11 was a catalyst for the security state, climate change for more government interference in our daily lives. The book does not delve into the trends of world politics of the past 40 years, nor is any context given, but nevertheless it does not detract from this shocking long-form essay on the lockdown fraud.

Michael P Senger har done an incredible job with Snake Oil. This should be required reading for anyone who fell for the massive propaganda campaign by the CCP known as "lockdown".

I partly fell for the first wave of propaganda in early 2020 of China building hospitals in 2 weeks and people falling over dead in the streets. As things progressed I turned more and more critical of lockdowns and have followed the debate for the last two years. Even though I've been very interested in the debate and propaganda back and forth this book revealed MANY things I didn't know and laid it all out in a very clear and concise way.

This is a perfect book for anyone who wants to know more about the CCP propaganda underlying the catastrophe of lockdowns. Have a friend or relative who still buys the "two weeks to flatten the curve" BS? Give them this book! A great gift and conversation starter.
