Editorial Reviews

Originally founded in 2011 by former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray, Snakecharmer includes high caliber musicians like Laurie Wisefield, Harry James, Adam Wakeman and Chris Ousey making for a unique supergroup as the members have earned double platinum albums and played to crowds of hundreds of thousands. Snakecharmers members have an impressive history through their work with Whitesnake, Wishbone Ash, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Tina Turner, Gary Moore, Magnum, Thunder, Michael Schenker Group, Brian May Band, We Will Rock You and Heartland. The band is now releasing their first album at the beginning of 2013, a self-titled effort and is looking forward to a worldwide tour in support of the album. Musically this record is everything you would expect from musicians with such a pedigree: a finely crafted Hard Rock album with Blues and Melodic overtones, akin to Whitesnake (1979-81 era), Bad Company with hints of early Foreigner as well.

Snakecharmer is an excellent album by any measure. The songs snap to attention, Chris Ousey sings his ass off, guitarists Mick Moody and Laurie Wisefield sound even better than you'd guess, you suddenly realize how much of Whitesnake's signature sound came from Neil Murray's bass, Adam Wakeman sounds much closer to the Lord than his pop, and Harry James hits the traps with a commanding, cozy beat. In fact, this record is going to turn tons of heads and put plenty asses into seats when the band hits the road.

The band's veteran players have great resumes - Mick Moody and Neil Murray were at the creation of one of hard rock's finest ever moments, the original Whitesnake. Chosen by David Coverdale while the singer was still twirling the mic stand for Deep Purple, the pair with them brought enough blues rock bluster to keep comparisons to Coverdale's purple past to a minimum and allowed Whitesnake to be its own band. Neil Murray - upon listening to this record, you will know just how much he meant to the overall sound of Whitesnake, and why he has been the 'go to' guy for guitarslingers the likes of John Sykes, Tony Iommi, Gary Moore and my old boss and friend, Michael Schenker. Harry James is best known as Thunder's thunder, but he's beat the tubs for Terraplane, Magnum, Ian Gillan, Graham Bonnet, and many others - he's as close as we have to the distinctive, slamming backbeat of Cozy Powell, and he is just exemplary on this outing.

I bought this album after reading all of the great remarks about it and how it sounded like the classic 70's version of Whitesnake. I'm a huge fan of all of the musicians involved and the bands they played in and own all of their other albums...that said this album didn't grab me the way I thought it would and was slightly disappointing...it's not bad by any means it just lacks spark especially in the guitar department...the songs are all kind of mid paced and the solo's lack that bite, panic and tone of the old Whitesnake and Wishbone ash stuff...the rhythm guitars could of used a little more bite and volume also. To me it sounds way to safe and laid back like a band playing by the numbers. A few more punchy up tempo tunes and maybe a slow burner with some ripping biting guitar licks would of made this a much better CD...as it is it's kind of bland and not at all what I was expecting...give me the last few Whitesnake CD's with Doug Aldrich on guitar...if you want to hear some killer heavy bluesy vintage sounding stuff pick up the new S.U.N. CD Something Unto Nothing with Sass Jordan & Brian Tichy it smokes this...or the killer new The Force called "Stone Cold" CD. Stone Cold

I can't top Tony Conley's review- won't even try. I just want to re-enforce it.

I can't imagine ANY fan of this type of music not loving this Album!
Shades of Bad Company and early Whitesnake for sure. This is old-school British polished-rock.

Basically, if you have albums that you love with any of these players on them, you're gonna love this album too. 4 1/2 stars!

WHY It grabbed me and shook me! Track 3 got in my head and just would not leave me alone but, that's ALRIGHT ! I like it! Fantastic ! I like this better than anything "Company of Snakes" "The Snakes" OR "Whitesnake" has put out for quite some time. Marsden is not on this one but Mick and Neil went and got Laurie Wisefield from Wishbone Ash so it's cool. Top notch engineering, production and mix as well as stellar performances by ALL musicians involved make this a great choice. If you like blues based hard rock like "Bad Company" "Badlands" and " Whitesnake" OLD WHITESNAKE ! THEN COB ON TO ONE HOMIE OR you could sit around and listen to some more Boston and Fleetwood Mac on the radio... BUT DON'T LET OLGA CATCH YOU

Laurie Wisefield and Moddy + great combination. I saw Laurie when he was with Wishbone Ash in the late 70's and loved Moody's work with Whitesnake on the Ready and Willing album. This album is filled with blues chops and the tracks are great. Would expect them to gain more followers in the coming years.

I was really looking forward to this disc, as I'm sure most Whitesnake historians were too. Well, what we have here is a disc that sounds like generic 80s piddle, a 'heavied up' Brian Adams (which is the last thing anyone needs.) No good riffs, no good songs and very few tasty guitar solos. Odd considering there is no market for this type of pablum. This band had nothing to lose by putting out a blues rock barnburner, but they released an embarassing 80s-style form of music that no self respecting fan of the old band (you know who!) would even remotely embrace. And I've listened to this a lot. It just ain't what you think it is. Buyer beware.
