The title of this book is something we can all relate to. When I first heard about Dr. Adrianne Ahern's book Snap out of It Now! and that she wanted me to write the introduction, I was more than honored. I'm not a doctor by any means, and the closest I'll ever come to being one is through my constant access to them through my profession as a professional player in the Women's National Basketball Association and with USA Basketball.
You will love this book because it's applicable to people of all backgrounds and age groups. There are valuable lessons to be learned and information to be absorbed. We've all had ups and downs in our lives, and despite how perfect my life may seem to some, I'm certainly not excluded from having hard times. Even my Olympic gold medal won't deflect the challenges life brings.
By the grace of God, I've made the decision to snap out of it several times in my life: whether it was on the court or in my personal life. By changing certain habits and patterns, I've turned my life around to ensure that my good days outweigh the bad ones. You can do that, too.
During my youth, I never really felt like I fit in with my peers. I was born with a hearing problem that required me to wear bulky hearing aids. I had a speech problem and wore glasses and braces. My classmates made sure that I knew that I was different. I remember running home from school just about every day, wanting to give up and wondering why I had to be so different. The constant negativity that surrounded me in my childhood and the constant tears that flooded my life made me question God's purpose for me on this earth.
In college I truly learned to accept myself and learned that, despite some of the things going on in my life, I needed to take control. I adjusted my attitude and began thinking and being more positive. Reading has always been a passion of mine and my favorite books are those that transform your life and improve your overall well-being. Snap Out of It Now! is one of those books. I am very grateful for the positive impact it will make on your life as well.
As you focus on the steps in this book, study each step and apply it to your life. Doing so will help you to grow mentally, physically and spiritually. It took me a long time to accept myself for who I am, and even to this day there are times when the negativity seems to seep in. But, being able to take a step back to refocus helps me to get my mind and life back on target. The breathing techniques and journaling activities that Dr. Ahern teaches can do wonders for all of us.
It is amazing that something as simple as breathing can be used to improve our lives. It is something we all do naturally, yet we often forget how to do it properly. By taking advantage of this book and others like it, we are able to improve our lives and push through our struggles. Reading this book will equip you with the necessary information you need to become the best you that you can be. Happiness starts from within, and if we want to get the most out of our lives, it's important that we start with ourselves. By reading this, you are committing yourself to breaking out of a negative mindset and enjoying a happier life.
So come on folks. Snap out of It, take control of your life and don't look back. Challenge yourself to form your own destiny. With the help of this book, you will.

I think of this as therapy in a box. The thrust of the book is that our negative behaviors (as well as positive ones) are motivated not just by conscious reactions to present-day stimuli, but by our internal conditioning. This conditioning has developed since childhood and is in large part who we are; we see the world through it. We have created much of this conditioning subconsciously; defense mechanisms to shield us from inner fears, anxieties, pain, etc. If we develop some understanding of the subconscious conditioning, which is typically more complex and layered than we think of it as being, and acknowledge it as guiding us towards destructive actions, then we are in a position to dissipate negative effects as we see fit. There is a focus on breathing and living in the moment, with an understanding of why our feelings and reactions exist.
This ties a lot of threads together into an entirely rational package, and can be applied in any number of directed self-improvement efforts. I definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone, especially if there's something about yourself that you want to change, and don't understand why you haven't. My focus was on losing weight, and ceasing to overeat. And a little while after reading this, I've lost 20 pounds in 2 months. Step 2 was counting calories and exercising. Step 1 was reading and internalizing this book.
