1. Allow the snap lids to thoroughly dry COMPLETELY or risk mold growth.
2. Do not microwave the lids. They will warp.
3. If the container is just coming out of the freezer, leave it at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes. Going from one temperature extreme to another increases the risk of glass breakage.
4. They are cheaper at Costco, especially when a rebate comes with it.
We really wanted glass for when our son went to his babysitter, his lunch could be heated up in the microwave or oven. We have used these new containers in the fridge, freezer, microwave, oven, dishwasher, and hand washing. We have not tried to take the glassware from the freezer directly into an oven. But we are not also TRYING to break the dishes. But these new containers have been wonderful for all of our uses. We have made baked spaghetti and stuffed shells in the containers, let them cool on the counter-top and then refrigerated, and heating them up for lunch in the microwave over the following days. No issues at all with that. I read some concerns people had with previous Snapware glass containers, but these dishes are great for cooking in.
The lids snap on extremely well, nice and tight. No leaking at all, and the seal locking is nice taking lunch to work and putting in my lunchbag and not worrying if it will spill. They are not difficult to lock or unlock, but the hold is tight enough it shouldn't break accidentally. The lids seem sturdier than the old Snapware lids. The locking part seems heavier duty, and the rubber gasket/seal is attached so you won't find them floating about in the bottom of the dishwasher like the regular Snapware seals. The plastic top is apparently designed to be written on. That is a feature we have not tested, and I don't imagine will be used by our household. But maybe when we have multiple kids taking lunches to school, it might be important.
Cleaning them by hand or in the washer is a breeze. Even after having baked-on tomato sauce and cheese, the dishes clean beautifully. Storing them in the cabinet was something we were concerned with. Reading about other glass containers, people always complain about stacking them inside each other. We have not had any issues with chipping or cracking, and we stack the glassware together, and stack the lids separately. It has worked for us with no issues yet.
We did not purchase on Amazon, we actually got two sets at our local Costco. The sets were just over $20 each, and we did not have to wait for them to arrive. We did have concerns with one of the rectangular containers when we opened the box though. Out of the two sets, there was one dish were the glass had some irregularities and looked troublesome. The glass was not cracked, but with the ripples in it, I would not trust it in the microwave or oven, or probably even the dishwasher. So I called up World Kitchen (the owners of Snapware and Pyrex), told them about the dish and my concerns with it. Immediately the rep I was speaking with offered to send out a new dish, warning me it could be a few weeks until it arrived. The new container arrived in three days and was in perfect condition. Prompt, friendly customer service! I have long been a fan of Pyrex, and even though the glass recipe might be different than my grandmother's Pyrex, they still stand behind their products.
As for problems with this set, you have the standard issues with any glass containers. These containers are heavier than plastic containers of a similar size. The glass has potential for cracking or shattering if dropped or thrown. Glass containers gets hot when placed in a microwave or oven, and you could potentially burn yourself. These containers are clear, so it is not great if you are trying to hide things in them. These containers are not recommended for use on a stove-top or open flame.
I would heartily recommend this product to anyone who wants sturdy glass containers that seal tight, that are free of BPA, that are easy to clean, that are usable in the oven/microwave/dishwasher/fridge/freezer, and that are made in the USA!
tl;dr : great containers!
I struggled between buying this grouping, or the one with 8 containers with the blue lids. I ultimately decided on this one because 1) it had more pieces and 2) it seemed like these lids would be better. I know there were some complaints about the blue lids being hard to get on/off and since I am super wimpy, these won out. Overall, I am really pleased with them! The lids are way easier to deal with then normal tupperware and the seal is just as good. It might even be better, since there is no way of accidentally not sealing the lid all the way. The containers themselves are great too. I find the sizes very useful for the amounts of leftovers I tend to have. I like that I can use them in any cooking form, especially. I will bake in the dish, serve it on the dinner table (it looks very presentable, just like any pyrex baking dish), put the lid on it and stick it in the fridge, and then microwave it the next day (without the lid). It has saved me a lot of dishes!
The downsides to owning these are very small. 1) I wasn't really a fan of the varying colors in the lids, which is why I almost bought the blue lid food storage containers. But now, I notice them less and less, and it does help in finding the correct lid in a hurry. 2) While you do not have to worry about the glass staining from spaghetti sauce, I did notice a little bit of staining on the rubber seal of the lid. No one will ever notice this besides you, though. And, it is a huge step up from the terrible staining that plastic food containers get.
I'm sure some people love the feature where you can write on the lids, but I have not done so, nor do I see myself doing it in the future. Being able to see through the container I have no need to label what the food is, and food isn't left in the fridge long enough to label when to throw it out.
Overall, I recommend these to anyone and everyone. I like them so much, I own two sets!
Update 2-20-14: My husband has been microwaving the lids, and now two lids do not fully clasp. So DO NOT microwave the lids!!
