This book made me SO ANGRY!! which, you would think would make me hate it… But, as I always say, if a book can instill such strong emotion of any sort (as long as it is not due to horrible writing, or vague plot points), then it is a worthy read! With this story is was because of the character of Sir Henry Cruttendon who brought such rage out that I couldn’t stop reading in the hopes that he would get his due. I read as the despair of Elizabeth and Jack poured onto that page, and just HOPED that they would get their revenge!
It was a tough book to read because it involved the humiliation of a strong, beautiful woman at the hands of a man to save her beloved, causing this book to represent the weakness of women in this day. Men had all the power, and they knew how to use it, even without flashing their money around. Their influence was enough to have others cowering. There is no one to stand up for you if he sets his sights on you, and there is no standing up for someone else, as a woman, without giving them what they want.
The characters of Matthew and Thomas were the biggest mystery to me. How do you go from being a penniless actor, to causing the accusations of innocent people for money?? The tortures and pain they inflicted… I get that times were hard for them, but there has to be some blight on their soul to cause them to turn to something so evil for profit and to feel nothing about it! Is it the fact that they weren’t doing the killing themselves that made them feel they weren’t entirely in the wrong?? I wish there was a little more about them, as I felt that the story could have almost been told without them being a part of it.
….All I can say is, that ending. Wow. I just feel like I wouldn’t have seen that coming. I would highly recommend it, for sure!
It’s just a novella,so short and so worth your time, really, and I highly recommend it!
What a great story!! It's short but it's captivating!! I didn't want it to end!
Sir Henry Cruttendon is known as the most ruthless man in the county. No one crosses him and lives to tell about it. Now, he has his sights on Elizabeth Fiennes. She's beautiful, sensuous, and she won't give him the time of day. Determined to make her his by any means possible, he uses the recent epidemic of witch trials to his advantage to remove the one obstacle he sees in his way - Jack Tyler. But, even the best laid plans can go wrong. Sir Henry will soon learn that he is not the only one that doesn't like to be crossed.
Elizabeth Fiennes knows she could have any man she chose. She has countless admirers, but her heart belongs to Jack Tyler. He's handsome and highly ranked in the King's army. After rebuking the advances of Sir Henry, she is thinking about nothing more than wedding Jack. But, she soon learns that her refusal of his affecctions has dire consequences for her and her new husband. She'll do whatever is needed to save him, including sacrificing herself. What Sir Henry doesn't realize is that he's just made the biggest mistake of his life by messing with Elizabeth Fiennes. She has friends in dark places, and he's about to meet them.
I loved this story! Historical horror at its best! This was a quick read but there was so much packed in that I felt as though I had read a full length novel! There's diabolical plans, suspense, action, twists, and an ending that will leave you with your mouth agape! I'd recommend this one to any lover of horror, the paranormal, historical fiction, or anyone who just loves a good read!!
To be 100% honest I didn’t find it scary but that didn’t bother me as what I did sound was a brilliant story that I really, really enjoyed!
I liked the characters, the plot was solid and enjoyable and it was fun, it is a good story set in the 17th century involving witchcraft, it makes no claims to be historical accurate – just enjoy it for what it is!
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and both have been superb!! Very highly recommended I loved it, 5 stars!
