Product Description

Product Description

Built to last through even the most extreme conditions, the SnoBossTM 26-inch high-capacity blade with steel wear strip allows for the removal of more snow in less time and is constructed using only high quality resins. Together, the blade and handle provide optimal design integrity and do so with no unwanted screws, nuts, rivets, or edges. And it's even reversible. Just turn it over, and it's ideal for scraping tight areas, such as steps and porches. Nothing works harder, or more comfortably, to keep snow from getting in your way. This item features an aluminum handle that is lightweight and highly durable. Two grips allow for optimal hand placement and ergonomic shoveling. Footstep provides necessary leverage for heavier loads. This unit is 50% lighter than a sleigh shovel.

The version of the product that I am reviewing has a plastic head/scoop/blade, with a metal edge along the mouth of the scoop, matching the photo of the product shown on the Amazon product page. This product saw its debut on 12-27-10 when my driveway/sidewalk (in NJ) and most of the northeast USA was blanketed under what may have been as much as 2.5 to 3 feet of snow.

I found this product more ergonomic, more efficient, and more effective than single-shafted shovels I have used, including the S-curved or crooked "ergonomic" shafted shovel, when it comes to pushing, scooping/lifting/dumping, and/or sliding/dragging/transporting snow to where it needs to go at large clumps at a time. The downside would be that, when using it for scooping/lifting, the dumping movement can be difficult compared to the single-shaft shovels.

Ergonomics is key with choosing a snow shovel because it is so easy to throw one's back out or otherwise injure oneself during shoveling. Usually this comes from having to bend over constantly, as standard single-shaft shovels require. The "ergonomic" crooked-shaft shovel is an improvement but is not designed for optimal push/plow style snow-moving.

I list the pro's and con's of the product as follows:

PRO:

1. for pushing it is efficient, effective, and ergonomic. it's hard to imagine another design better for pushing snow.

The mouth of the blade is wide enough for pushing in broad, efficient swathes. of course, most standard pusher shovels also feature wide heads, but this product allows for greater force and leverage for pushing due to two shafts splitting the burden between two points of force rather than concentrating all the burden at the center point.

Why can't all companies and products be this good?

This is a special purpose shovel. I don't use it as much as my Rugg Backsaver. I shovel a real lot of snow and when I need it, this shovel is indispensable. It is unique, nobody makes anything else like it. Pushing, scraping, and moving giant chunks of snow, it's unbeatable. Ergo design lets you use both arms. Not great for tossing snow but that's not what I have this one for.

See the photo. When you get those big piles of packed snow, I chop a giant chunk of it loose with this thing. Then I ram the blade underneath and pry the chunk off the ground and drag it to get rid of it. I have moved hunks weighing at least 100 lbs, easily, like pushing a baby carriage. Work that would have taken hours is done in a few minutes.

It is also great for lighter snow storms where you have a lot of area to clear. I push it along and all the snow gets scraped up and accumulates in the scoop. Then, when I get to the end of the driveway I can either lift and dump or just tilt it to unload if I have room for that.

After a year of abusing this thing, I wore the metal edge out. I emailed Ames/TrueTemper. They sent me 4 new edges ups, a day or two, no cost at all to me. Couldn't be easier......John, Massachusetts

I just bought one and used it on my driveway and sidewalk tonight. Overall, I was very impressed with the design. I "pushed" most of the snow and lifted very little of it. Compared to other shovels I used, I love this one. My back is thanking me. Like the other reviewers, I also found that it was sticky on the sidewalk. This was a minor nuisance, and I just changed the angle a bit to fix it. I didn't have any sticking problems on the driveway.
The dual arm design seems a lot sturdier to me. The little "hook" at the top makes for a comfortable, ergonomic design. I've had shovels with handles that twisted off and were uncomfortable to use. Plus, when the snow weight isn't even (which happens quite a bit) there is extra torque to deal with. This shovel appears to be a more rugged design. I only used it for a half hour, so I reserve judgement on design robustness.
Nonetheless, the ability to clear my driveway without repeatedly bending over, lifting and throwing snow was well worth the price.

I will never forget the look on my wife's face when she saw me bring this thing home. It's a SUPER SHOVEL! Yes it's big but believe it or not this shovel really saves your back. It puts more strain on your arms and shoulders but that's OK. I have a bad back and I had no pain after shoveling NYC's 20" snowfall. The metal strip does stick sometimes but I think when it breaks in completely it will be fine. I bought it at Loews for $35 or something like that. I highly recommend this shovel, and so does my wife. She used it too and took back everything she said about it.

This shovel is so substantial that when I saw the box it arrived in, I thought they'd delivered a refrigerator by mistake! It's very sturdy and easy to use. But most important, it's easy on the back. It's wide and picks up a good amount of snow. The handles at different heights make it easy to pick up. I'd definitely recommend.

I liked the design but the Snoboss turned out to be a piece of junk. I bought it during last year's heavy snow season (NJ's 2010 winter) so it certainly was put to the test. Unfortunately the True Temper Snoboss failed. It made it through maybe 3 snow storms before the yellow plastic cracked right up the middle and was finished. The metal edge was a piece of junk too. It didn't cut through anything. So in summary if you have a super light, powder snowfall then this could come in handy. Otherwise skip it!
