Review

"[Snow Day] is the best horror/drama/thriller that I've read in 2013, and one of the best pieces of fiction that I've ever read, period..." --Ursula K. Raphael, Amazon Top 1,000 Reviewer

"Snow Day is a riveting, bone-chilling thriller that I would highly recommend to any fan of this genre.  I hope this is just the first of many more stories to come from this talented author.  FIVE stars." -- Midnight Thrillers Book Blog

"Fantastic read... I absolutely loved this book! ...Beautifully written and very believable. I felt what this kid felt, saw what he saw. I would love to read more by this author." -- Orphie Street, Amazon Customer Review

"I recommend it highly! ...The story is exciting, adventurous and disturbingly frightful. The real lure of this story is how the readers can place themselves into this neighborhood back in time and re-live all the fun, fear, excitement, and unknown many of us grew up with." -- Mike D., Amazon Customer Review

"So convincingly real, it leaves you reeling... [Snow Day is] very well written, chillingly horrific and believably supernatural. This one makes a great diversion with which to indulge yourself." -- POIA, Amazon Customer Review

"Riveting...thought provoking...Loved the book..." -- Michele Wilson, Amazon Customer Review

I guess I'm going to have to change my "I hate first person PoV" description of myself. This is the third story I've read in the last two weeks that is first person, and I loved it.

This is Mr. Maurer's first "book" - actually it's a novella due to it's short length, but I will be reading more of his works when they come out. It starts out as a murder mystery, cuts to a slice of life tale about about a ten-year-old growing up in the 1970's and then turns into one of the coolest "chase" scenes ever with a massive fight for survival. There's a twist at the end that I admittedly saw coming, but it was written well enough that it was still quite creepy.

I'm giving this five stars - I hated to put it down to go to bed.

I was not sure what I was getting with Snow Day but I was expecting a short little scary story with a storybook ending...... not even close. This is a much too realistic story of a ten year old boy who was thrust into a nightmare not of his making. I was having some remembrances of Mystic River, The Lady in White and a one of An American Werewolf In London (no there are no werewolves in this book). It was shocking, engrossing and terrible with an ending that while far from happy ever after was satisfying for the reader and probably will make you remember it everytime it snows.

There is not a lot I can add to this without telling too much since this story is short (approx 100 pages) and it starts with a slap on the face then backs things up a bit. You are lulled into a typical northern snow day away from school before things take a horrible turn. This is a great story packed into these 100 pages and I highly recommend you read it.

I gotta give this short novella a solid 4 1/2 stars before I even start my review...

What a great little short story this author has offered up to his readers. Written in a narrative style and peppered with humorous dialogue which nails the adolescent mind and thought pattern perfectly, the author puts you in the middle of a nightmare which leaves you breathless and shaking. This story encompasses every adult's thought of "how did I survive my youth?". Well...some of us don't.

Very well written, chillingly horrific and believably supernatural, this one makes a great diversion with which to indulge yourself.

I read this as a free download for my kindle fire hd. If it hadn't been free I don't know that I would've read it... I am so happy I did; and after reading it I can honestly say it would've been worth it to buy it! I like Stephen King and Dean Koontz.. I would rate Dan Maurer right up there, and I don't say that lightly. This book gets you from the 1st page..and doesn't' t even let go when it's over. It's truly a haunting story.

This is a great read that you need to get your snacks and drinks before starting as you aren't going to want to put it down! Read it in two sittings and it was only two because there were other important things needing done, otherwise it would have been done in one sitting! Couldn't wait to see what he had happen next and how it was resolved!

Dan Maurer's "Snow Day" is only 100 pages long, but he manages to pack 2 1/2 very different stories into those 100 pages. No, it's not a collection; it's one single novella that manages to be both an effective coming-of-age tale and a suspenseful real life horror story. Meanwhile, the half-story is a somewhat awkward framing device with some other extraneous plot elements added that don't quite mesh with the main storyline.

The main storyline in "Snow Day" is terrific, a very impressive outing by a first time author. The story is set in New Jersey in the mid-1970s (Gerald Ford is President) when the narrator, Billy, is 10 years old. The kids in this neighborhood organize themselves by age, and Billy finds himself in the unenviable position of being in the middle, sandwiched neatly between the 14-year-olds who organize the recreational activities (and have a big advantage in snowball fights due to age and size) and the six-year-olds, who are too little to be much fun around. Maurer spends the first half of the story describing Billy's life in a neighborhood that was a bit on the rough side (a couple of the adults in the neighborhood are mob connected).

Readers learn quite quickly that life in this neighborhood is more dangerous than it might seem in the very first chapter, a prologue, in which Billy reports discovering a dead body in a basement. Most of the rest of the book recounts events leading up to and then immediately following that discovery. Naturally, the tone of the prologue affects readers' perceptions of the chapters that follow, as they try to read between the lines and carefully examine each incident Maurer relates to see how it leads to the fateful rendezvous in the basement.

The revelation comes as somewhat of a surprise.
