Review

Beautiful story about complex relationships and the restorative power of love. - Larry Moffitt, chief editor, Washington Times Foundation

Heartwarming story that speaks to the transformative power of love, truth, and acceptance. You root for her characters as you settle into a feel-good novel that is reminiscent of the late-great Maeve Binchy. - Adele Ryan McDowell, author, Balancing Act

... entertaining contemporary drama starring a wonderful coastal Maine locale and a strong cast ... - Midwest Book Review

I have never written a review of a book before but feel compelled to write about this one. I have recently started to read romance novels at my "mature" age of over 60 only to be disappointed by the lack of understanding of what truly make a lasting relationship in life and marriage. However, I have found that this book written by Phyllis Edgerly Ring has a great deal of substance and insight into human relationships. The making of a relationship is not just liking the outside packaging and going for it, but developing a friendship, respect and true interest in the other person. It is getting to know the other person's character which helps to make permanent any relationship.

The path of the two main characters in this book shows how "real" people can develop and find love in a more realistic manner than with Hollywood's idea of romance that many of us have followed in our lives. Yes, the characters, Evan and Tess have a lot to work through from their previous experiences, both involving intense trauma and traumatic circumstances in their lives, but they learn to trust and lean on each other in their healing process.

This is an excellent read. I found it hard to put down and deal with everyday duties once I started reading it. I even liked it so much, I read it a second time before writing this review.

Buy the book, and enjoy the writing style of Phyllis Edgerly Ring. You won't regret it.

Emotionally destroyed by the death of her fiancée, Tess Johansen returns to the small town of Knowle on the coast of Maine, to the Spinnaker Inn; the place where she and her fiancée had known a season of happiness before disease ravaged his body and tore her life apart. With the money he left her, Tess buys into the financially struggling Inn and becomes co-owners with her dear friend, Claire. She throws herself into the day-to-day operations of the lovely old Inn, hoping hard work and exhaustion will help to ease her pain and the secret guilt she carries.
Tess soon encounters Evan Marston, the local woodworker who lives as a recluse, hoping to escape his own guilt and shame. The pair strikes up a friendship that soon blossoms into much more. Evan seeks to help Tess overcome her demons, even though he is tormented by his own. When Tess volunteers to take a shipment of paintings to a Portland art gallery for her elderly artist friend, Rowan, she unwittingly becomes a catalyst for change and healing as, in a twist of fate, Evan's, Claire's, and Rowan's ghosts come tumbling out of their closets.
Snow Fence Road is my favorite kind of story, a story of romance, of friendship, and of inner healing. I'm partial to novels set in New England, and Phyllis Edgerly Ring has brought her setting and her characters to life with astounding accuracy and heart melting charm.Indeed, I'm eager to plan a trip to the coastal town of Knowle to be a guest at the Spinnaker Inn, to pick blueberries with Tess and Claire, or sit on the porch and enjoy fresh blueberry muffins, because surely this must be a real place with living, breathing people.
Ms. Ring has a lovely writing style and the reader cannot help but pause to savor the beauty of the scenery and the nuggets of truth about life and love that are sprinkled so generously throughout the pages of this wonderful novel.

I struggled getting into this book. I am usually drawn in quickly but had to start this three different times. I really did not feel much of a connection between the hero and heroine. It was a bit too drab for my tastes and somewhat anticlimactic.

Maybe you should read it for yourself and disregard my review since there are quite a few others that seemed to really like it but I really fought to get through it. I don't begin a book and not finish, so it was tough to struggle through.

Review for Snow Fence Road, a novel by Phyllis Edgerly Ring

Intuitive, gentle, compassionate love is the saving grace for Evan and Tess, who have both succumbed to grief of loss through the death of their future spouses. Evan is stricken by deceit and blame; Tess with horrible guilt. Slowly, they both re-enter their own lives, reclaiming themselves in the town of Knowle, Maine, where their first acquaintance reveals itself as a reacquaintance, especially to Evan. A spark of interest grows between them and forms into a true friendship. Love between the two follows, but not until each can acknowledge and deal with the pain of loss and release from guilt. Suspense holds the reader and the characters as the decisions made by a previous generation create what first appears to be insurmountable turmoil between the main characters, but later shows its rewards through wisdom. A promising and respectful love between two helpmates develops in the snowy town where they are reminded that they are never without assistance while journeying through this earthly life.

A very sweet, pleasant read with detailed imagery keeps the reader engaged and present with the characters.

Once I started this book I finished it in one sitting! The setting is on the coast of Maine (which is where I spent a lot of time as a kid). The descriptions of the area were very accurate and the illustrations created in my mind matched my memories. The characters were people I have met in my own life. Good hearted people that have made mistakes, that feel guilt and remorse - that try to hide their pain by throwing themselves into work etc. The author brought me deep into the lives of the characters so that I could feel the pain, the joy and the beginnings of trust in a new relationship. What I loved most was the depiction of healing that comes when unconditional love is showered upon others. When a person is encouraged to show everything they hold onto- the love, the pain even the darkness and they are loved completely, unconditionally the shadows and pain no longer have any power and true healing begins. In case you can't tell I loved the book!
