This is a selection of Christmas (not "holiday" -- there is a definite Christian spin to the music) tunes from Erasure, so if you've ever heard their music, you'll know what to expect: Lots of synth electronica, strong not-quite-countertenor vocals, and very upbeat.
I really enjoyed obscure versions of selections like "Gaudete," and originals like "Loving Man" (by far my favorite tracks on the album), are very well done -- if you're not tapping your foot through it kindly turn in your gun and your Santa hat, detective, 'cause you're outta here!
Some of the more traditional Christmas fare (like "Silent Night," "Midnight Clear," and "Silver Bells" just fall short for me for some reason. They're not deal-breakers by any means, but they just aren't up to par with the rest of the album. They honestly sound campy, like they're taking pot shots at inane holiday music... At least that's what I tell myself to get through these pretty terrible renditions. Just for reference, I'm not offended by that -- I am an atheist -- I just don't find them particularly good covers of holiday music.
Aside from that complaint, the album as a whole is great fun and is now in my regular holiday rotation.

Editorial Reviews
Snow Globe is a combination of original Erasure songs and Christmas cover songs. Unlike the bells and whistles, glitter and tinsel sets that crowd the market come Christmas-time, Snow Globe is possessed of something more in the wistfully, strangely subdued celebratory mould of recent seasonal albums by Tracey Thorn and Kate Bush.

I do not much care for Christmas albums. Too syrupy, too similar, too familiar. Is there some unwritten (or written) rule to stick to the same 50-75 songs? I wonder if Kelly Clarkson had to throw darts to decide which standards to cover. On the other hand I really like Erasure, always have. Finally saw them live last year and Andy Bell seems to sound better with age. So when I heard of Snow Globe, it was a bit of a dilemma. My hesitation lasted as long as it took me to listen/watch Gaudete video to the end. I could not get it out of my head for weeks, the darn thing is so catchy. It's in Latin! I am indifferent to religion!! And yet, I kept on humming this hymn, without stop. Then I got the rest of the album, and it's been in fairly heavy rotation ever since.
There is a lot to like. First of all, calling it a Christmas album is a bit of misnomer. It's more like a winter's tale, of which Christmas is obviously a part. After the first listen, I was reminded of the Erasure's "Nightbird" (2005) record, one of my favorites. Slower tempo songs, somewhat somber, choral and lyrical, with a couple really good faster numbers sprinkled in. It also reminded me of some darker, wintery fairy tales I heard/read as a kid. Fittingly enough, I later came across the interview where they said Blood on the Snow was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "Steadfast Tin Soldier". Perhaps, just like Andersen's tales, Snow Globe is an album that is most fully appreciated by adults? Most like their desserts sweet, but savory ones can be just as satisfying. This album is that kind of a treat, at least it is for me.
As for specific songs - I already mentioned Gaudete. Besides its catchiness, I think it's worth noting just how good Andy's vocals are on it. If he did not sing it right, it would be campy and laughable. Instead it works - and shows, in my opinion, how he continues to become better at his craft, even at the 28th year marker of his career, which is remarkable.
I believe Make it Wonderful is probably a top 5 Erasure song of all time. At least in my ranking. Bells of Love and There'll Be No Tomorrow are pretty good, but reminiscent of past Erasure songs. Blood on the Snow has grown on me. Sleep Quietly unexpectedly turned out quite hummable too. There are unavoidable Christmas standards from the dartboard list, but I thought they were covered in a way that fit well with the rest of the album, reduced sugar and all.
Overall, I found Snow Globe to be a very pleasing gift. With all the requisite covers and standards, it might not have enough original material and tempo to rank with my all-time favorite Erasure records (hence the rating), but it is a very satisfying counterbalance to the season's usual fare. Great finish to a year, just like a good savory dessert.

Wow!! After the very mediocre Tomorrow's World, Erasure really returned to form with this AMAZING collection of songs. The spin on traditional Christmas classics are charming and fun, but the new songs are what truly blew me away! Erasure dug back into their classic sound to produce timeless new music that exemplified the Erasure sound and added new favorites to an already amazing back catalog of songs! This CD is not to be missed. If you're a fan of Erasure, you'll love this - if you're not a fan, it's a wonderful way to introduce yourself to their music.

What most people realize is that they never have lol but this is definitely an album for anyone who has let their following of Erasure dwindle. It has some great holiday classics (Silent Night will never be the same) as well as some amazing originals (Bells of Love and Loving Man being the showstoppers that are the same Erasure from 20 years ago. Amazing album ... can't wait for the next full-length of originals which is rumored to be coming out either 2014 or 2015 at the latest. Go on with your bad selves, boys, and don't ever leave us out of it!

I am a huge fan of Erasure and a huge enemy of Christmas songs! What a dilemma! Anyway I have pretty much everything these guys have done so I went ahead and bought it. The non Christmas songs are not too bad and some of the Christmas songs are ok as well. Overall I give this a middle of the road rating.

I first saw erasure in 1990 live during their Wild! Tour, and have been an avid fan since. This is my least favorite album since Union Street, but then I thought - what is it about it that I don't like? It's the Christmas Carols.... Love Gaudete, though - go figure. My favorites are Bells of Love, Make it Wonderful, and Loving Man, which seem the most like "typical" Erasure. So 4 good songs on an album is still better than the run rate for a lot of other albums I've bought!

First of all love Erasure's sound and was quite happy to find out there was a Christmas Album.(I also like Christmas albums)
I think the arrangements are first class, different sounds for different kinds of songs. Loved the old songs with the new sound. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because, and I am being picky, some of the songs ended similarly, kind of abrupt, which works for one but not two or three...but having said that I really loved the album. their sound just "does it" for me. liked it so much I sent one to a friend as well. So I would definitely recommend it.

Already my favourite Christmas album & a return to form for Erasue
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 2013Verified Purchase
This album is a tribute to Andy Bell's partner of 25 years (Paul Hickey). He died last year, but always wanted Erasure to make a Christmas album. I am glad they finally did. This is an excellent album that I have listened to many times this festive season and I expect I will sneak the odd listen at other times of year! This is not only my favourite Christmas album but is a real return to form for Erasure. Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are both at the top of their game. Who needs a choir?! Gaudete is the song that made me buy this. It is so upbeat and beautifully sung. I also love the lyrics to this old Latin carol which are wonderfully articulated here. All of Erasures original compositions included here are thankfully far better than those on their previous album. Even the now seemingly obligatory atheist chorus (in this case on opener "Bells of Love") in no way spoils this album: "I don't believe in your religion / I only know what I can see". This is because it is drowned in the religious sentiments of the chosen carols, and especially Ruth Heller's composition "Sleep Quietly"(which Katherine Jenkins fans will recognise). I equally love Erasure's version of "In the Bleak Midwinter". Admittedly there are a few tracks I often skip due to general over-familiarity ("The Christmas Song", the strange version of "White Christmas" and sometimes "Silent Night"). However the other tracks are so good I didn't deduct a star for this. The dropped star is in protest to Erasure not including a version of their now hard-to-find "God rest ye merry gentleman", from the "Crackers International Part II" EP. A redux version was included with other bonus tracks on an expensive pre-order only special boxset edition of the album that few of us had a chance to own. I hate these modern marketing ploys!

Erasure have consistently produced some of the most wonderful pieces of music from the mid 80s

Erasure have consistently produced some of the most wonderful pieces of music from the mid 80s, seriously they have well & truly left their mark on musical history. However they have not left a glittery mark on producing a good Christmas album, this is so gloomy & depressing, just the thing to listen to as the turkey is having its kneck rung. Seriously a complete let down, not a bit of sparkle or campness in sight...... worst Christmas cd I've heard or bought, it's going to the charity shop

Trad. arr. Bell & Clarke

A mixture of traditional Christmas songs and new Erasure tracks, all with the trademark Erasure sound. As another reviewer has said, this is quite a dark album. Rather than go for a bright, cheery sound, Andy and Vince have done a wonderful job of tempering the joy with offbeat rhythms, discordant bells and the arrangements trimmed down to the essentials. It makes the Christmas album that most artists release at some point in their careers rather different, and it works very well.
Interestingly, my favourite tracks on this CD are the traditional songs and carols that Erasure have arranged in their inimitable style. "Bleak Midwinter" has never sounded better. "Gaudete" is a good choice for a single, with Maddy Prior in the mix (must be a sample as she is not credited). I usually play A Tapestry of Carols when I put up my decorations, but this year, it'll be Erasure!

Reviews about music are subjective to the reviewers taste - if you don't like Erasure then you probably won't like this! I however, love them and love this. It's basically their reworking of some Christmas carols and classics, with a couple of original songs thrown in. My particular favourites are 'Gaudette' and 'Silent Night', which I find eerily beautiful. I also bought Annie Lennox's Christmas album, and although I think she's a fabulous singer, I much prefer the Erasure offering.
