Now that I have an entire winter under my belt with the Snow Joe, I can honestly say that it performed well above what I ever expected from a plastic, electric unit. We got some pretty impressive snows, last winter, up to 26 inches at a time of wet and heavy snow. The fist time we got 12 inches, I expected to have to call my brother-in-law and have him lend me his gas unit. But the Snow Joe handled it. I had to take two passes to get the full 12 inches, taking about 6 inches, then backing up and getting it clean to the concrete. But compared to a shovel, or a the hassle and cost of a two stage gas unit, it was great. It even handled the packed and frozen stuff the city plow leaves in front of the curbside mailbox. It's so light that if I need to reposition it, I just pick it up and carry it to the next place. As far as cord issues, I find that this is really no more hassle than you have while vacuuming, and once you work out a system for your particular drive/sidewalk, it gets second nature. I did store the unit in the house, since it was small enough. I just put down a garbage bag, with an old towel on top, to catch the melt. By the end of the 2012/2013 winter, the snow piles in our boulevard were to tall for me to see over, at 6'1" tall, and our mailbox was accessed through a little hole we'd dug into that snow bank. The Snow Joe had thrown all of it there, including the heavy piles left by the plow. I worked it well above what the designers meant it to do, I'm sure, but it handled it. Other than an occasional scratch from the odd rock and a missing sticker, or two, it barely looks used.
Recommended, whole-heartedly, by this Wisconsinite, who's happy to no longer have to break his back, shoveling.
We had one moderately heavy snow fall with drifts of 18" on our porch. It tunneled under the drift, I backed it out and went back through again and eventually the area was cleaned. But it takes a moderate degree of physical effort. If the snow were packed down, it would have been very labor intensive to clear such densely-packed snow. Again, it is a great emergency back-up machine or unit for small areas.
Got a chance to give this a workout today with the dump of snow given to us by winter storm "Hunter" here in the Rochester NY region. There was a lot of drifting snow so depending on where you looked, we had anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet of snow. It was a heavier snow, not super light and fluffy but not the super wet stuff either.
This little guy did a great job on our deck and walkway, even powering through drifts on the deck that were over the height of its 13 inch intake. It did require some do-overs in spots where the snow was just collapsing into the void that the blower had already created but did a great job. Usually, it'll take an hour or more to clean off this much snow with a shovel--It's a pretty big deck that runs the entire length of the house. This took me about 15-20 minutes including clearing some trails out into the lawn for the dogs to run. That's another good feature of this, you can use it in the lawn with a tilt so it doesn't dig up the grass.
Took another 10 minutes to clear off the front walkway which had some two foot drifts.
The picture I included was on the turn-around from a pass with the blower to show the average height of the snow that had accumulated on our deck. The second picture is to give you some perspective on the size of this item versus a gas powered Ariens 28 inch snow blower that we use for the heavy work on the driveway. So, I'd say that while it's good at the deck and sidewalk type work, I wouldn't depend on it for the frozen, chunky, heavy snow that we can get, or to clear out the mess created at the end of your driveway by the municipal plows when they make their rounds.
I didn’t get delivery of this until the day after the big snowfall but if I had I would have plowed my deck and the driveway multiple times before it got so deep. So maybe it would have been able to do the driveway. Either way it is a good price if only for huge storms and using on the deck. We get 8 inches tonight so will see if it can clear the driveway this time.
Note I also bought the same 12/3 50’ cord I others recommended. Cheaper than the same one at Walmart.
However, overall i love this unit. It works great depending on the conditions. It's powerful enough for 8+ inches of powderly snow, throws it a good distance away, easy to use, easy to manuever, light-weight enough for my petite wife to use, and it fit my budget.
