The conditions have to be "just right". I read the reviews and thought that this would have enough power to handle most circumstances, but I was wrong. We have had 3 snowfalls since we got it, the first time, the snow was about 3 inches, but it was sort of heavy, so when it didn't work well and the snow clogged in the spout, I chalked it up to the wight of the snow and shoveled instead. The next snow was a pretty small amount, about 2 inches, and it worked OK, but it seemed almost like there wasn't enough snow to throw it any good distance and we had to go over it a couple of times to actually move the snow off the driveway completely. Today's storm was going to be big, so my son and I started early, when there was about 5-6 in. of light fluffy snow, knowing that we would need to do it a few times, but the auger kept stopping and we could barely get a full pass in, sometimes just a foot or so before it quit and needed to be re-start. I think the auger stops after very little resistance as a safety mechanism. We couldn't get a first pass in and now have over a foot, so we are back to shoveling. Anyway, it is junk. Unless you get a perfect snowfall every time where you live, this will not work for you.

I definitely love it. Considering that I owned it for about a month and I have to say that I'm completely satisfied with it!

I live in Michigan, so that's a place where snow falling is pretty high. I'll tell you this: yesterday, I was able to clean my driveway, sideways and patio and then, to move to a friend's of mine home (easily carrying it into my car trunk) and did the same thing at his place. After all of this, I was worried about how much battery life was still left and, after cleaning mine and my friends driveways and sideways, I discovered there were still 2 led out of 3 available! That was an outstanding performance!

Of course, you can't expect to throw the snow very far if there is just 1.5 inch of snow on the ground. But that's definitely not the case in which you need to do it in the real world.

I suggest to buy this little, eco-friendly, quite, light and powerful guy!!!

Really, really disappointed. If the temperature is in the teens, this machine works really well, but if you're over 20 degrees, you're screwed. Any real moisture or even some slight melt in the snow fall itself, and you're done. This device turns into an expensive and ineffective snow plow instantly, clogging repeatedly within inches, and unable to throw anything more than a foot from the machine. For the light dusting of snow in frigid temperatures, this machine is a dream, but this year, that ended pretty quickly and the subsequent snow fall was the heavier 'wetter' snow, which this device cannot handle in ANY quantity. I really wanted this to work, for a multitude of reasons... easier to maintain with just the battery to recharge, quieter, lighter, ease of use. Unfortunately, the technology just isn't there yet. It's an admirable effort and if you're in the Tundra where it's cold and dry, then this is the machine for you. If you live in the continental U.S., I simply cannot recommend it. Of course I can't return it, so I'll be Craigs Listing it very soon. I gave it a good solid run from December to March, but it's over.

Since my doc has advised I should no longer shovel snow, I went looking for a snow blower that was manageable for this single woman. I had realistic expectations for this unit. I didn't expect it to move snow like a 2-stage gas machine and it doesn't. But I didn't want the expense, weight or maintenance of a gas model. What I wanted was something to clean up to 5" of light to moderate weight snow in my driveway and front walks.

I had 5" of powdery snow the night I received the machine, so first thing in the morning, I fired it up and put it to work. It performed flawlessly removing that light snow, temp outside was in the low 20's.

A couple of days later, we had snowfall of approx 3.5", heavier, wet stuff. Temp was in the low 30's. I didn't really expect it to remove that without some hard work, but I was pleasantly surprised. It did jam up in the chute a few times, but that was easily cleared out and blowing continued. Once again I cleared the front walks and driveway. Yes, it was a bit more work than my first clearing, blowing the powder snow in cold temps, but it was still much less effort than shoveling would have been.

A couple of days later we had more of the heavy, wet stuff, temps in the low 30's. It snowed constantly from late afternoon, into the early morning hours. I kept up with it, going out to clear it when the snow got to about 2.5 to 3" in depth. Again, it worked well clearing the snow. No, it doesn't throw it very far (even powdery snow does not throw as far as the manufacturer claims) and it's taken some practice to figure out the best pattern to clear things that get the blown snow out of the way, but once I figured out the best route, it worked well. As others have noted, at times it also does tend to spit snow out of the middle of the chute, leaving it next to the blower rather than blowing it up, out of the way. I back up and blow over it again when it does that, usually takes care of it.

The battery compartment cover is a joke. The small plastic tab that locks it shut broke off on the first use. The manufacturer really needs to address this in a redesign. Thin plastic snap tabs are not going to survive cold temps. I use a small bungee cord now to keep it closed. Annoying, but not a deal breaker since it doesn't affect the functionality of the machine (as long as you find a method to keep it closed, to prevent snow/moisture from getting inside the battery compartment).

The design is also annoying in that the only way you can tell how much battery you have left is to open the battery compartment (thus exposing it to snow/moisture getting inside) and pushing the button on the battery. Since the manufacturer specifically states that completely depleting the battery can result in ruining it (and they are expensive to replace), it's ridiculous there isn't an easy visual way to check it. You should be able to press a button somewhere on the unit without opening the battery compartment to check battery status.

In the times I have used it, the lowest the battery has gotten in use was down to one light (out of 3). Usually, I still have 2 lights remaining when I finish. Obviously, moving heavier snow requires more power. I did purchase a backup battery just to have that peace of mind, in case I do have a snowfall that depletes the battery.

It did not clear the snow at the end of the driveway piled up by the city plow. I didn't expect it would. That still requires shoveling.

Overall, in spite of the negatives stated, I'm pleased with the purchase. It has definitely saved considerable wear and tear on me this winter and I expect it will continue to do so.

Mediocre snow blower

I bought this based on the positive reviews but I really fail to see why this blower is rated so well.
It really struggles with anything that isn't light fluffy snow.
We recently had 15 cm of medium density snow and it had the following problems:
1. Not enough power and got bogged down or just stopped completely
2. Throw distance was only 3-4 feet
3. The chute constantly got clogged
1 and 3 exasperated each other while 2 made it useless for the driveway.

My advice is to plow before the snow reaches 10 cm and don't use the full width of the blower.
For light fluffy snow, it's good for up to 20 cm and throws 10+ feet.
I've never used it on wet snow but I very much doubt it could handle it.
The positives are that it's lightweight with almost zero maintenance.
I had a tough time deciding between giving it 1 or 2 stars.
I went with 2 stars only because I think I can work around the limitations but this is NOT a product I would recommend.

Good Blower for Large Driveways and Light Snow

Bought the Snow Joe a few weeks back. 3 sizable snowfalls since then. 6 car driveway. I'd say it's ideal for 6, max 8" of light snow, so good for initial clearing of large driveways. That said, it's not powerful enough to throw more than about 8" of snow, at least not without running into the snow multiple times and it simply cannot throw the heavier, wetter snow - particularly the mix of water and ice that the snow plow pushes back into your driveway when it passes. For that, you'll still have to get out a shovel. So, in short, if you want to quickly clear light snow and still do some shoveling, it does the job, if you want to take on big drifts and slush, this unit doesn't have the power. The one batter seems sufficient thus far.

Received it last week and used it in the big snow dump we had this weekend. It's super quiet. The battery lasts up to 50 minutes and it hadn't quit yet. Was enough to do the side walk on My big corner lot and 3 neighbors from walks.

Does not throw the snow very far. 5 maybe 6 feet. It is super quiet which is nice as I work shift work and can still clear my walks at night or early in the am.

So far pretty happy. Nice and light. My wife who is pretty slight can move it around easily.

Good snow blower for what is intended

I purchased this snow blower, knowing it's short falls (not enough power, inability to hand deep or wet snow, etc). Knowing that, I used it for what it was intended, about 5 to 10cm of new fallen snow, and it handles it marvelously. Snow throwing distance is a bit exaggerated as I could never have it throw the distance it advertised. As for battery, it does not work as long as advertised when it has to work clearing some wet stuff. Battery emptied and over heated in 30 minutes of 15cm of slightly wet snow, and could not have it charging due to battery over heating (that's minus one star for me... why does battery over heat?. Other than that, good blower for the job it is intended.
