From Benji Davies, the award-winning creator of Tad and The Storm Whale, comes a dazzling wintery tale about a young girl wishing for a perfect Christmas tree, and a young snowflake wishing for the perfect place to land.

High, high up in the clouds, a tiny snowflake is made. Perfectly fluffy and white, she tumbles and bounces on the clouds. But then, to her dismay, she begins to fall. . . .

Exquisitely written and beautifully illustrated, The Snowflake tells the separate stories of one snowflake and one little girl—both longing for their own special place in the world—that spin together into a magical ending. The snowflake and Noelle discover that wherever we go, and however we fall, in the end, we all find a way to shine.

Perfect for fans of The Night Before Christmas, illustrated by Loren Long, and Dasher by Matt Tavares.

Benji Davies is an illustrator, author and animation director.

In his books he aims to capture how it feels to be a child. By immersing themselves in the stories he writes and illustrates, Benji hopes that children will find a quiet confidence with which to navigate the noise and bustle of the real world.

His first self-penned picture book The Storm Whale - since hailed a modern classic - won the inaugural Oscar’s Book Prize and was Dutch Picture Book Of The Year 2017. His second, Grandad’s Island, garnered similar plaudits, winning the children’s book category of the AOI World Illustration Awards and being crowned Children’s Book of the Year at the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards. In 2020 he won Oscar's Book Prize for a second time with Tad, a story about a tadpole making its way in the big, wide pond. All three of these books have since been adapted for the stage.

He is the illustrator of Nosy Crow’s internationally bestselling board book series, Bizzy Bear.

Benji’s books can been read in over thirty-five languages and have sold many millions of copies around the world.

Benji lives in East London with his wife and daughter.

…and, for me, this is one.
Sometimes, it is the little things in life.

The illustrations offer lots to talk about, some with a touch of nostalgia, such as the old ‘Roses’-like tin that stores the Christmas decorations...a further nod perhaps to the book’s dedication:

~ ‘For my dad, who inspired this story ~ the real Pappie’

ooOoo

From the back cover:

❄️ ‘Wherever the wind takes us,
we all find a place to land…

A timeless Christmas story from one of today’s most celebrated and best-loved picture-book creators.'

From the creator of [[ASIN:147116456X The Storm Whale]]

~ THE SNOWFLAKE by BENJI DAVIES

ooOoo

The quality produced book measures around 31 cm x 23.5 cm
The impressive blue with red snowflake embossed thick board cover is dressed in a quality dustjacket, the front of which is embellished to catch the change of light.

Inside are 32 matte finish pages, the story spanning 28, over double page spreads. The inside cover pages are dramatic in white on red.
The text is clear in black for the best part, just a little tricky to read on the darker backgrounds in places (and may have been better in white), IMO.

The story is accompanied by some beautiful atmospheric illustrations some of which also seem to radiate light, indicative in one of the stock images currently shown above.
The attention to detail is appreciated by the older eye…e.g. the shadows, the footprints in the snow, the (mock) texture to the snow-covered roof of the house…this is a picture book for my forever shelf.

From the dust jacket front flap:

❄️ ‘High, high up in the clouds a tiny snowflake is made. Perfectly fluffy and white, she tumbles and bounces inside the cloud. But then she begins to fall…

Example of text:

❄️ ‘High in the sky, one winter's night,
a snowflake was made.

She wheeled and skipped and twirled
between the clouds.

"Wheeeeeeee!" she squealed.

Only soon she began to fall.

"But I don't want to fall!" said the snowflake.’ ❄️
