The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry Hardcover – September 1, 2015

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

Take a deeper look at the unique, hidden beauty of winter with the world's foremost snowflake expert.

From ten thousand feet above the Earth, a snowflake begins its fall. Its journey starts when ice forms around a nucleus of dust and is blown by the winds through clouds where the crystals blossom into tiny ice stars. Because it weighs next to nothing, a snow crystal may take hours to fall--finally landing where Caltech physicist Kenneth Libbrecht can use microphotography to record the tiny, intricate, frozen artistry of the snowflake. In The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry, Libbrecht teams with author Rachel Wing to create the most fascinating book on snowflakes ever published. This book defines the art and science of snowflakes for generations.

Join Libbrecht and Wing as they charmingly chronicle the creation of snow crystals, both in nature and in the laboratory. The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry touches the hand of Mother Nature, showing incredible microphotography of individual snow crystals from all over the world. The book tells the history of snowflake observations mixed with an entertaining blend of tales of hunting snowflakes, snowflakes in literature and art, and the science of snowflakes, to bring a flurry of delightful snowflakes into the hands of warm-bodied humans everywhere. With this captivating book, we can better appreciate snowflakes, winter's frozen artistry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What better way to teach your children to truly appreciate the beauty of nature than them seeing snow with their own eyes and then going on this journey with The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry. Nothing else shows the miracle that is nature better than this book." - The Palmetto Queen blog

'Kenneth Libbrecht, the world's leading snowflake expert, accompanied by park ranger and snowflake chaser Rachel Wing, give readers the ins and outs of the frozen artistry of snow. Seriously, it's mind-boggling. This is a genuinely beautiful little book.'

About the Author

Kenneth Libbrecht is a professor of physics at Caltech, where he studies the molecular dynamics of crystal growth, especially how ice crystals grow from water vapor, which is essentially the physics of snowflakes. He has authored several books on this topic, including The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty, The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry, The Art of the Snowflake, and Field Guide to Snowflakes. Dr. Libbrecht served as science consultant on the Disney film Frozen. He lives in Pasadena with his wife, Rachel Wing. They have two children.

Kenneth Libbrecht knows perhaps more than anyone should about the science of snowflakes. He had his first exposure to the subject during many cold winters growing up on a farm outside of Fargo, North Dakota. He eventually made his way out of the snow and into the sun of Southern California, becoming a professor of physics at Caltech.

In the mid 1990's, Libbrecht's interest in the molecular dynamics of crystal growth led him back to his roots and into to a detailed study of how ice crystals grow from water vapor, which is essentially the physics of snowflakes. This ongoing endeavor seeks to better understand how crystals grow and how complex patterns emerge in the process. Libbrecht also furthered the art of snow crystal photography and has taken over 10,000 pictures of all different types of snowflakes. His books display many beautiful photographs and describe how these diminutive ice sculptures manage to appear, quite literally, out of thin air. In 2006, the U.S. Post Office created a set of commemorative first-class postage stamps featuring Libbrecht's snowflake photographs.

Things book helps answer the question “How do snowflakes form?” The authors provide an excellent introduction to the beauty and wonder of snowflakes through answering the above question and through the gorgeous images of snowflakes that are generously featured throughout the book.

This book is beautiful. I'm keeping it on the coffee table because the cover is just that lovely. The inside is nice too—you can have a good time just paging through looking at the up-close photos of snowflakes. Or you can spend more time reading about how snow crystals are formed and what different types and shapes there are and become a snow trivia expert. (I appreciate how the author keeps those science details approachable.) Both adults and kids can have a good time looking through this book.

. Wonderful book full of beautiful photos and knowledge. Bought for homeschooling my girls in addition to an addition to our library. They are small and like to look at the pictures for now however I believe they will be able able to learn a lot from the depth of knowledge given in the book in later years.

I read another review that said that this was a good coffee-table-type book. So I bought it. I disagree that this is a good coffee table book. To me, that type of book should primarily be pictures, which is not the case here. This book is too wordy for a coffee table book. I was looking for something that was primarily snowflake photographs, and this does not fit the bill. While it certainly has some lovely photos, it is very informational. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing whatsoever against books with words, lol. I am an avid reader actually. But I was looking for a picture book. This is not just a picture book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book

I was afraid that it would be too light of information, but was pleased to see nice and clear explanations on crystal formation. Some pictures (not of snowflakes) could have been a bit better quality as some are pixelate and rather generic. They don't take much away from the content though.
