Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4 - A lonely snowman, stranded on a Manhattan street corner during the week after Christmas, wishes for a winter vacation in a warmer climate. A magical bluebird overhears him, and the next day the snowman boards a plane headed for a tropical paradise. He thoroughly enjoys his nearly yearlong vacation and is not looking forward to returning to the frigid city until a few partying warriors run out of ice and decide that a piece of the snowman is the best way to chill their drinks. Before he makes a quick retreat, he fills his suitcase with colorful tropical flowers to share with the people of New York City. This improbable story, told in the same meter as Clement C. Moore's 'Twas the Night before Christmas (Houghton, 1912), adds nothing to the world of Christmas-related stories for children. Many of the rhymes are forced, and the telling becomes more preposterous as it goes along. The eye-popping, stunning cut-paper illustrations cannot save this nonsensical tale. - Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN

"Move over, Frosty, another snowman is magically living the good life Snazzy cut-paper-collages capture both the bustle of the big city and a beachy, island groove." --Publishers Weekly --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sing-song poetry is a joy to read :

"The first thing he saw were the coconut trees / Swaying on sands near the bluest of seas / As glittering fish swam through the bright coral caves / And seahorses pranced on the crests of the waves"

Other books w/ good poetry are "Avalanche" (Rosen, Christmas book) / "A Sip of Aesop" (Yolen) / "Down to the Sea with Mr. McGee" ( Van Dusen ) / and although it's merely the great classic poem, do NOT get any other book than "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" than ISBN 0688038107 & Illustrator Anatoly Ivanov. No other book's artwork comes close, & having lived near the town in Germany, I kept an eye out for any & alll copies.

This is an engaging Christmas story about the adventures of a snowman who gets sick of living in New York City when it starts to get snowy and cold. After Christmas the snowman needs a vacation and goes south for a year to a tropical island paradise, but paradise is not what it seems and he comes back to New York City just in time for Christmas. Refreshing to have a new holiday story to read and the snowman's adventures are amusing. The poetry is well written and has funny references adults will appreciate (cranky taxi drivers in NYC). The illustrations are beautiful. My children wanted it read to them again and again. I am amused every time I read it.

Great story about what the snowmen do in the "off season"! Bright and colorful illustrations - can't wait to use it with my students.
