The two short stories make up less than twenty pages, but provide lots of food for thought. They are simple and well-written. Middle grade students and teens will find them just as delightful as adult readers. Refreshing change of pace.
THAT OLD SILK HAT THEY FOUND :
That snowman you built? He's alive. He thinks, he speaks, and he feels. They speak to each other, since everyone else is oblivious. Telling tales of what has been, and what is to come.
I will never build another snowman as long as I live.
IDES OF MARCH :
What would be The Apocalypse to a snowman?
As Charlie sits at his desk, doing his taxes, he learnes that the answer to this question only brings more questions.
* I strongly suggest reading the 'Afterward' in this book.
The actual events that inspired the stories THAT OLD SILK HAT THEY FOUND and IDES OF MARCH are fascinating.
I'm the type of gal who DOES watch DVD commentary, and BTS extras, and I love this part. Learning about the author, and what drives them, is just as interesting to me as the actual stories.
Finding out that Mark Leslie is a Calvin & Hobbes fan, too... well, that's just a bonus to me!
The 1st story is an interesting exercise in trying to put yourself into the head of a freshly created snowman. I liked it, but it was in no way scary. Like, at all. And it does lack a conventional story arc, there is no real build up or anything.
The 2nd story involves a man who witnesses an unusual snowman theft. Who could be behind it? The answer is creative and makes for a fun read. I liked this story even more than the first. The ending was especially good. However this story was not scary or spooky either.
Overall and interesting, if quick, read. Recommended for its creativity. Just don't expect to be scared.
I like the title "Snowman Shivers" but the scary part is not very accurate. These are definitely two snowmen tales, but they are not scary.
The short stories are thought provoking to some extent. I think they would fit in better with a few longer stories. They don't work well together, paired in a small book format. There needs to be more of a collection of short stories.
Stories weren't scary but more along the lines of making you wonder, "what if." The stories were interesting. The book is a quick easy read. There were some missing words, etc. For such a short book, it could have been edited better (just my opinion).
I recommend the book for a quick unusual (but nice) read.
