I remember one story about girl and boy slumber party she hosted. She did so to ensure the kids didn’t drive intoxicated. Just imagine what went through my head, visualizing having both sexes of hormonal teenagers under one roof. My God, we don’t do that in the South! She also shared stories of wrecked cars, the horrors you find hidden under their mattresses or stuffed in their pants’ pockets – all the s*** that doesn’t fit into the neat little puzzle we have created for our children.
Fast-forward. When those things happened to me, I was prepared. I didn’t feel like my kids were destined for prison. I didn’t feel like such a bad mother. I was able to handle these life occurrences with a sense of calm…well, most of the time.
Many mothers, young or old, don’t have a friend like this, and this is the ‘why’ for my post. A writer-friend shared an essay of hers that is included in a new book. I read her story, then didn’t stop until I’d read the other 59 stories.
This should be required reading for all moms. I am buying several copies to put in our church’s preschool library. It’s perfect for book club. Grandmothers, you need to give this book to your children having babies.
