I broke down and bought this album knowing only the tracks 'Maverick' and 'Ghosts of American Astronauts' (loved both for many years) and having only "The Mekons Rock 'n Roll" in my album collection. It did not disappoint. I can't classify it; the music can seem deceptively simple right up to the point one realizes how much they're actually putting into it. The founding member is interested in all things musical and the large-and-largely-intact member lineup is still at it today with an energy undiminished through lo these many years. "So Good It Hurts" contains that variety and energy, with sharp edged lyrics. The Mekons' music actually *is* for everyone (excepting maybe Thatcher apologists), just not everyone knows it yet. Also: tasty riffs galore.

This album is one of the Mekon's best. The songs are very soothing and haunting at best. I enjoy it very much, recently got it on CD, originally bought the Vinyl LP when it came out. If you have not listened to the Mekons, try them out, you will find the male and female vocals beautiful and out there at the same time, but with substance."Ghosts Of American Astronauts" and "Johnny Miner" are my fave songs on the album.Of note are "Dora" and also "(Sometimes I Feel Like) Fletcher Christian." There is a great video of "Ghosts Of American Astronauts."
