He says what so many already think and puts this to music in a masterfully simple way. The music so much begs the listener to close their eyes and just be still for a minute to listen.(Not recommended for those driving). A very "from the heart" style, mostly using only his voice and a guitar.
I came by this musician from only a couple lines caught from a "Scrubs" episode:
"There ain't no reason (that)things are this way, that's how they've always been and intend to stay, I can't explain why we live this way, we do it everyday" .. with the help of a quick Google search -voila!
While not a completely stellar album (my opinion) it still has many strong tracks on it, and if you are the type that love to discover other people through the music they make, I recommend Mr. Dennen highly... I just felt like some of the tracks in the middle of album played off the same sound he generated for other tracks but with less diversity and musical uniqueness leaving all his words the burden to keep the songs interesting- in all I think only 4 tracks made it to my "burn-a-hole-in-it" standards, but it's definitely not a disc I regret buying, I wish this man a long successful career in being the simple, honest, real-life type of guy he is. He is a very welcome addition to my music collection. Thumbs up Mr. Dennen.
The melodies are so infectious you might want to wear gloves when handling the CD so the hooks don't draw blood. These tunes will run through your head till someone else's well crafted songs tape over the mental imprints.
Be warned; some of these cuts are quite political, on the left side, such that some listeners may be put off by them. I wouldn't want anyone listening to Brett who is offended by his leanings such that they can't give his music a fair shake. The songs that are political deal with war, poverty, this country's high incarceration rate, lying politicians and other weighty subjects. He doesn't claim to have the answers but he does a bang up job of establishing the talking points. There is also plenty here of a non-political nature and those songs are no less memorable.
He's a great talent. Among the best I've ever encountered; spanning my 44 years of serious music listening.
This is a rich, complex collection of songs that display the talents of a very intellegent and insightful songwriter. His voice is expressive and while it may lack some range, on this collection it exhibits subtle variations that work well with the individual songs. The arrangements are like fine art. They possess a mesmerizing musical diversity that keeps the CD fresh and distinct throughout. Whoever produced this album did a super job. The band is cohesive and displays great musicianship. This effort is really "So Much More". It is a true classic and I hope it provides Mr. Dennon with the appropriate recognition. I can not even come up with a few highlights since the whole collection is precious.
