On a positive note, the book includes the following non-project informational sections: "Tools & Techniques," which consists of a list of required and helpful craft supplies, a guide to selecting and caring for felt (including brief instructions for making wool felt from used sweaters), and a description of basic embroidery stitches (again, no illustrations are provided in this section); "Where to Source Supplies," which provides contact information for online and brick and mortar craft suppliers; and "How to Find Inspiration," which includes web addresses for the author's favorite blogs and online resources, a list of other books on felt art, and a small summary of online and hard copy resources for further reading on embroidery.
The projects are a mixed bag: on the one hand, the intricate, multi-colored Double-Ruffle Necklace doesn't look like anything I've seen in any other felt craft book; but on the other hand, is it really necessary to dedicate two pages to the Heart Ornament, which basically consists of two cut-out heart shapes sewn back to back? Unfortunately, the majority of the twenty-four projects tends to be similar to the Heart Ornament -- simple sewing projects that many children, while playing with basic craft supplies, are able to figure out for themselves without having to be inspired by, or referring to, a $20.00 book on felt projects.
The book does contain at least one photo of each finished project, the titles of which are as follows: Tiara Necklace, Snowflake Necklace, Cupcake Toppers, Birdie Bag, Rosette Hairpins, Carnation Corsage, Graphic Table Runner, Scrappy Garland, Poppy Pillow, Floral Clutch, Spiral Earrings, Spiral Necklace, Yarn Wreath, Gift Bows, Helen Fascinator, Sharon Headband, Double-Ruffle Necklace, Mini Wafer Earrings, Mosaic Pincushion, Dragonfly Pennant, Rose Bouquet, Rose Boutonniere, Heart Ornament, and Magic Mushroom. Where a template or pattern would be useful, one has been provided.
The binding does appear to be strong, and the book will probably survive hours of being propped open.
Bottom line: I recommend checking the book out from the library or borrowing a copy from a friend before deciding to buy So Pretty! Felt.
helen fascinator- a simple fascinator with embriodery made tolook like flowers
magical mushroom- a whimsical mushroom
heart ornament- in my opinion a page filler
