From the Soapbox to the Stage: How to Use Your Passion to Start a Speaking Business Paperback – July 10, 2013
About the Author
Bill Corbett is an award winning professional speaker who has been speaking since 1995. He has been on stages across the U.S. for everything from brief lectures to keynote speeches to multi-day training events. He is a regular contributor to network television affiliates, and produces and hosts his own television show. Bill is an award-winning author, writes a syndicated column, produced the Top-Notch Presentation Skills training video, lectures on leadership and communication skills, and provides coaching to individuals who aspire to develop their speaking business skills. After traveling and lecturing nationally for several years, Bill sat down and wrote this book in response to something audience members said to him over and over: “I want to do what you do. I want to speak for a living.” His latest book is here; a step-by-step blueprint for re-inventing yourself, using your expertise to start a speaking business and bringing your passion to the world! You know even if this book is focused on becoming a professional speaker it could be used as instructional manual to help you achieve your career goal whatever that might be.
If you think about it the most important step to becoming a successful speaker I to find your subject, what are you good at, what are you interested in and most importantly what are you passionate about?
With chapters ranging from when, how and why to give free speeches, to getting on radio to getting your own radio show, even if you have to pay for air time (I had no idea!), to making the right connections to using your bully pulpit to become an "expert" in your field it's all here.
Do you ever wonder how those talking heads get on CNN to talk about whatever is the topic of the day? Well this book tells you how. If strive to be one of those talking heads, this book will show you how to do it.
There is also a chapter about creating your professional credibility by writing an e-book. You have to like that. The author claims how you can write and publish an e-book without typing a word. Now that challenge doesn't get you turning those pages what will? After all if you are a speaker why would you want to write when you talk an e-book?
And finally there is a very good chapter on who to write a proposal and what to charge which is something I personally find challenging at times.
So if you want to be a professional speaker you need to have this book; of you are already a professional speaker there is plenty you can learn by reading this book and if even if you are not a professional speaker and don't plan to be one this book is going to help you with whatever your career is. I promise.
For anyone who is keen on the idea of being self employed in a field that provides excitement and joy, Corbett suggests asking ourselves the following: `What do I love enough to do for free? What do I do that causes time to feel different? What do I enjoy regardless of the opinions of other people? If only my life changed, would that be enough/ Are there any patterns in the things I like doing?' From that starting point he takes the reader step by step through the process he has discovered that leads to success as public speaker. A very few of his bits of advice and mentoring include how to find your area of expertise, how to prepare yourself to appear before an audience (tone, expression on face, body language must convey your words), passion happens when you really care about something, research your topic to become an expert in that line of thinking and YOUR CONTENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR SPEAKING CAREER - QUALITY, EARN EXPERT CREDENTIALS. Top-notch, in-demand speakers must have a thorough knowledge base from which to speak and the skill to present that knowledge in an informative and interesting format and always be engaged in self-improvement.
The remainder of the book includes the nuts and bolts of setting up a portable office, getting an online presence, speak for free and get noticed, how to get on radio and television talk shows, make brochures that include a meaningful photographic image and past customer comments, how to nurture relationships with audiences, and even how to write an eBook about your passionate area of interest! It is all here, a goldmine of information delivered in the most conversational manner believable. Highly recommended! Grady Harp, August 13
Corbett tells you how he started in the business and how you can too. He points out that this can easily begin while keeping your full-time job. He gives a step-by-step guide to follow. You don't have to have any experience. There are nuggets of gold in here for even a seasoned speaker. He teaches you how to hone your skills and get to work. I appreciate that he was not too wordy. He is down to the point and I felt like everything he suggested was truly possible, and that I could do it. This is definitely a book to have on your shelf. I would highly recommend it.
