About the Author
My name is Portia Williams I am 31 years old and a native of Portsmouth, Ohio but raised in Columbus,Ohio. As a current resident of Portsmouth, Ohio I am employed by Shawnee State University as an Admission Counselor. I am a mother of three beautiful children and wife of 8 years. I am also self-employed, working as a motivational speaker, in which this year I spoke at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio in February. I also had the opportunity to speak this year at the 12th Annual African American Leadership Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio in April. I have had the pleasure of sharing the platform with a dynamic speaker and author of Destined For Greatness, Dr. Robert L. Lawson and Aleta Mays Polley also a speaker and author of One Monkey Don't Stop No Show. My poem entitled, Let Me Freely Sing was published in Purpose Magazine of Columbus, Ohio in March 2000. One of my favorite poems that I wrote is Let Me Be My Black Self, published in Silhouette Magazine of Port! smouth, Ohio. In September 2000 I was featured in Careers 2000, a publication that showcased successful Shawnee State University graduates. Just last week I received a call from the Ohio Arts Council who informed me that they saw my picture on the front of the Portsmouth Daily Times Newspaper, and asked if I would submit a copy of my book to their auction.
I am also an advocate of community involvement in which I serve on the board of Habitat for Humanity of Scioto County, I am an Executive Board Member for Business and Professional Women. I also serve on a local steering committee to eradicate drugs and violence in the Portsmouth area. My husband and I are extremely involved in the educational process of our three children and always make a way to spend time with them.
The local community has been very supportive of my book, I had a book signing at Shawnee State University's bookstore which was very successful.
