The Sobakawa Pillow is filled with 100-percent buckwheat hulls. It has been used extensively throughout the Orient for hundreds of years and is still the pillow of choice in Japan. Buckwheat hulls are believed to offer therapeutic benefits far superior to traditional foam and feather pillows. In terms of Oriental medicine, the Sobakawa Pillow offers an important element of human health-having a cool head. The healthiest state of the body is called "ZU-KAN-SOKU-NETSU", meaning cool head and warm feet. Once these elements are out of balance (like warm head and cool extremities), the body is out of sync and hence suffers from a varieties of ailments including insomnia, headache, irritability, stiff neck and sluggishness. The 100-percent cotton fabric casing offers maximum air circulation, is very durable and above all is comfortable for sleeping.

1st: Wheat contents - To those who are concerned about a 'crunchy' noise. Its not as bad as what another person made it out to be- and I wonder if she used a pillow cases as recomme3nded to keep it clean. You would use a pillow case with any other pillow- right! Use 2 pillow cases if yu are sensitive the ever so slight wheat sound.
2nd: Composition - The lift mentioned by another person- that is merely a preference or possibly something you are just use to having with other pillows. This pillow is NOT meant to have lift- which is not only Japanese style but also not good for your neck! Too much lift is what gives headaches and neck aches as well as contributes to reflux and issues with Asthma (which I have)
3rd: Size -. This type of pillow is useless as any other size. You only need enough for your head and some room slightly around. Anything larger is a waste of space and money. Being this size also makes it perfect to take with you if you go away or just somewhere overnight.
4th: Sleep position - I am pretty much a side sleeper, but do try to sleep on my back since it is better for the spine. Using this while sleeping on my side, gives it support so that the head does not sink down causing a strain on the neck. This pillow in a way cradles your head, offering great support but not in a restrictive manner. When I am sick, I tend to sleep on my stomach- with this pillow, not neck pain when I wake up.
My personal use/experience:
I have Asthma & severe migraines. I do not get migraines when I use this pillow, nor does my Asthma act up when I am sleeping. If I sleep with another pillow- (like if I roll over in my sleep) when I wake up, I almost always have a headache or neck ache and always have a back ache.
My son liked the pillow so much, he kidnapped it (his words) so I had to buy myself another.
Then my fiance' used it for his shoulder after surgery, and then liked it so much I again, had to buy another one, plus an extra (just in case) which I am glad I did.
I have used this pillow after back surgery to lift my legs to lessen pressure off my spine after back surgery. It was a god send! I had major abdominal surgery twice this year. I took this pillow to the hospital with me- thank god! It was the only thing held against my body that helped me to get up without too much pain. When I had to cough, I used it against my abdomen- again I can say it was a god send!
I have given these as gifts and every single person loved it.
I bought this pillow about 12 years ago when it first came out and cost over $40. Knowing what I do now after all this time, I can say it is without a doubt, the best investment I have ever made for my personal well-being.
