Soccer in the City explores the complicated relationship between the world's most popular sport and inner-city America. The character and story-driven film, akin to Hoop Dreams and Waiting For Superman, examines how soccer is the sport best suited to provide city kids with easy access to teams, and the unquestionable results - on the pitch, in the classroom and in the community - that follow.

This documentary should be mandatory watching for anyone involved in soccer in the United States, particularly those with a focus on youth soccer or taking roles at U.S. Soccer. Our country is failing our children in many ways, but youth soccer represents many of them. Featuring in depth interviews with known and unknown heroes, this is worth your time.
It’s strikingly well done and fantastic for the senses (with an awesome soundtrack), but the content was even more powerful. It was interesting to learn about the pay-to-play system for soccer and how that happened. But it was enjoyable to learn it through the stories of such admirable and endearing individuals. I was impressed by the impact that organized play can have on kids’ lives as a whole - when given the opportunity. I left the movie much more knowledgeable and excited about the future of soccer and for kids! Hooray for Soccer in the City!
The message is great to give underrepresented youth a more level playing field, giving these kids an opportunity to academically excel, and form important bonds, as well as a higher self-esteem. And, for a few of these kids, soccer might even give them a profession! The movie tells this story with great interviews, creative direction and camera angles, as well as an excellent film score. This is a positive, encouraging, movie to help me believe in mankind and yes, soccer too!!
Soccer in the City was fantastic! I learned so much about the history of the sport. It was truly eye opening and inspiring to watch. I highly recommend it to any sports fan!

Why isn't the US better and more successful at soccer? This important documentary gives many insights and suggestions on how soccer can grow in the US by getting more kids in America's cities on the pitch and playing. Highly recommended.
What a great documentary. The production quality is strong and the theme of social consciousness is nice and tight throughout.
For those of us that wonder what alternative there are out there to the toxic pay-to-play model that American soccer is stuck in, this film provides the answer.

The film highlights some amazing soccer programs in the US and around the world that are making a big difference in kids’ lives. See it now - you’ll be glad you did!
