A phenomenal collection of players, the instrumental accompaniments and solos are first rate including and especially Jazzmeia's own voice which is a veritable godsend to the vocal jazz world. I am torn between four and five stars but was a bit disappointed in the song selection. Do not let that stop you from buying this album if you are a fan of vocal jazz in the African American tradition. This album is steeped in that tradition even as it pushes the envelope forward. The songs are really secondary here to what she does with them. It will blow you away.

Horn has absorbed Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln. Flora Purim, and Aretha Franklin but on the whole does her own thing. She has a gorgeous instrument, flawless and attractive to my ears, excellent diction, reads a lyric quite well and is a superior improviser. Horn also speaks her socio-political mind at the beginning of a few tracks. She coproduced this and used an excellent band and did some ambitious and effective multitracking. Horn divides the repertoire between statement and escapist songs which mostly works for me, but in time I suspect her own voice and direction will be more focused with maturity. In the meantime, enjoy a knockout CD!

A fabulous artist. She competed in the first Sarah Vaughn Competition and didn't win (can't understand why), but was named a "Rising Star". She returned the following year to win 1st place. Then went on to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition. So much to say about this talented artist. Listen for yourself.

Amazing album. Ms Horn has command of her wonderful voice, and uses it in the most interesting ways. All the musicians on the album are a delight to listen to.

Death-defying vocal range, incredibly inventive and extremely personable in person. Winning the 2015 Monk award is just the beginnning for Jazzmeia.

Ms Jazzmeia Horn came to my attention in September and since then she's been setting my ears alight with her Jazz singing which shows she knows her Jazz and treats it with respect. There's nod to Betty Carter and when you have Dee Dee and Cecil Bridgwater as mentors you know she's something special. She's not a Jazz lite pretty looking caramel coloured warbler, who the record labels try and push upon us. No Ms Horn will remind you of Erykah Badu with her looks and that afro-centric head wrap and adornments. However she sings like the greats of yesteryear, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and she can scat like Betty Carter. She's no sound-alike as she has her own voice but she will remind you of those legends as you listen to intently on this album,
Social Call is a great debut album and one she should be very proud of as I am now a fan. she's got a superb range, excellent phrasing and she can scat, which is becoming rare amongst many so called jazz singers. She's a new voice, a great voice, Jazz Right, not Jazz Lite.
My only wish for Jazzmeia Horn is that she doesn't listen to the senior duffs at the label and record whole album of Nina Simone or Billie Holiday songs and she never ever makes Christmas album.

I am sitting here listening to this exceptional album the 2nd time through. It is a stunning debut album. Anyone who loves the female voice in a jazz setting, with a great band and superb understated production values should just buy it. Listen for yourself. She is the real deal.

Definitely simmering from start to boiling point by time of last track.Prefer her vocal monologues and singing on Afroblue with her bands in cracking form throughout.Look forward to hearing more from this visually stunning lady---suspect she has yet to transform her assured live performances onto cds/vinyls.
