Fifty-four of the ablest people in law, medicine, political theory, philosophy, religious studies, history and a host of other disciplines got together at Princeton University at the end of 2008 to assess the social cost of pornography and what to do about it. "The Social Costs of Pornography: A Statement of Findings and Recommendations" is their report. It was released at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington on March 16, 2010. Anyone concerned with the pornogrification of our culture and what needs to be done about it should read this book. It contains recommendations for action by therapists, educators, journalists, private industry, celebrities, and government, including a call for the resumption of obscenity law enforcement by the Justice Department and legislation to permit civil suits for damages due to "negligent exposure of a minor or an unwilling adult to obscene materials."

When I first heard about these publications I was confused because it comes in three parts, and I didn't know if they were the same information in different formats or what. But they all contain different info. These are the three publications; you can buy them separately.

§ The Social Costs of Pornography: A Consultation (DVD of the proceedings)

§ The Social Costs of Pornography: A Collection of Papers (11 research papers from different scholars)

§ The Social Costs of Pornography: A Statement of Findings and Recommendations (a short 60 page commentary)

I started with the shortest one, of course, A Statement of Findings and Recommendations. It was a quick read; I finished it while restoring our PC to life after it had been bullied to the point of death by viruses and malware. The book kept me busy while waiting for all the software to load.

I am so pleased with the efforts of all the scholars involved in this project. Hallelujah, there are smart people out there who are worried too! Is anyone listening? Sound research concerning the danger of pornography is essential to raise awareness and move people to action. Because of the variety of experts involved in the group, their results present a consensus that is not based on one religious or political ideology.

The book presents 8 findings about the effects of pornography. It finishes with specific recommendations for people in the fields of therapy, education, journalism, industry, entertainment, and government.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a concise, rational state-of-the-situation report. I haven't finished the other two publications yet, but look forward to it when I get the chance.

As per the Executive Summary of this social commentary, "Widespread pornography consumption appears to pose a serious challenge to public health and to personal and familial well being. With concerted effort from legislators, the therapeutic community, educators, policymakers, and responsible corporate leaders, however, some of the negative effects of pornography consumption can be combated." Makes sense to me!

It is difficult to ignore the mounting scientific evidence that shows the serious harm caused to our nation by the easy access to hard core pornography on the Internet. This is a very important book.
