From the Author

There are 1 billion people all over the world sharing their lives on Facebook, and that's only one of many services enabling and dictating how we connect, how we learn, and how we act.

All in public.

At its core, social media is about people. As we change, it changes with us.

However, the very nature of social technologies is affecting us. Everything we know is being re-imagined.

Will we become more or less "human" as we embark on a one-way trip to socially aware devices, websites and companies?  Will the "Internet of Everything" become the "Internet of Us?" And what will we look like, talk like, and feel like when it does?

All of us have a role in the development of the SOCIAL STATE.

Choose your role wisely.

Just read "Social State" cover to cover...it was more than a read it was an experience!
Honestly, as a "low tech" gal I wondered if I would even get through it!
It is written wonderfully, very fluid and easy to understand... I feel like I've learnt ALOT and all the links made it enjoyably interactive...I literally laughed and cried!

I have enjoyed everything he has written in the past year I have known him. His work is factual and interesting, it borders on scientific analysis applied to social media without actually going there. The general person can not only understand it, but with his info-graphics and informative data, just about anyone can visualize what Esteban is reporting on and how it is changing so rapidly.

In SOCIAL STATE, Esteban Contreras skillfully provides an easy to follow overview of how we reached this moment in social - and makes the case of the business relevance of social media. While that may be obvious for many, it is the most asked question in the college classes that I teach (Social Media for Business). I use material from the book in the classes, and appreciate the links to fresh data from solid sources.

I recommend SOCIAL STATE as an important timeline and perspective book to understand the social sharing content economy.

I can't even remember how I came across this book, but boy I'm glad I did.

This was my first experience with Esteban Contreras and it certainly won't be my last.

This was a fantastic book on the overall state of social media, and I really liked how up to date and relevant it was. Esetban's experience at Samsung really adds a lot of value to his insights.

A quick read, with a decent amount of data. Don't miss it.

Of all the books I have read or perused about social media and social networks, I found Social State to be one of the best-written and least boring. We all know something about the sites and platforms discussed here, but the author has found a way to add value to the topic, and the fact that the book is completely up to date at the time of its writing is a bonus. If you have to get up to speed quickly on what "social" means to the world, I can't think of a better way than to read this book.

Social State provides a great review of all things social media. Esteban Contreras mixes his first hand experience with tons of great examples of how individuals, businesses and causes are using social media effectively. The book is a great primer for anyone new to social media marketing or anyone who wants a better understanding of how social media impacts all of us. As someone who works in social media I found the book to be insightful and thought-provoking.

Marketing and social media has a bunch of "talkers" with titles like "gurus" and "ninjas" ~ It is refreshing to find a real marketing "doer" like Esteban Contreras share his knowledge.

I met Esteban two years ago at a conference and I'm glad I read "Social State." The stats and real-life examples will help you see the social media implications and opportunities for 2013 from Esteban's unique point of view and experience. You should have each member of your team read this book, I did. @SocialJulio

I've had the pleasure of following Esteban Contreras since his early days as host of the Social Nerdia podcast and blog. When he announced he was writing a book on the state of social media, I was eager to get a copy. I've long identified with his point of view because all those years ago when we first met, we were both struggling through many of the same challenges and opportunities in companies that were just beginning to embrace social media as a marketing tactic.

The past few years have seen enormous shifts in not just the technology of media, but also the culture and psychology of social media. It's extremely difficult to keep up with it all, but Esteban has managed to do just that. In short, I wish I had his book four years ago when my team was building a B2B social marketing program from the ground up. I would've given each of my stakeholders a copy of this book as a comprehensive introduction to what social media is and why it's become the phenomenon that it is.

What is it about Social State that is so important for marketing stakeholders? Without question, even after years of social as a solid marketing tactic, companies are still struggling to balance the need for immediate bottom-line ROI with the benefit of longer-term customer relationship returns. I've seen countless fabulous social marketing programs slashed to pieces because stakeholders preferred to rely on "traditional" tactics that yield short-term but immediate results.

It's a lot easier in most businesses to claim immediate success, however fleeting, than to urge patience for success that lies down the road.
